Wednesday was the first official day of basketball practice for the 2018-19 season, but LCM senior Braden Bridges has been preparing for this season long before Oct. 24. Tabbed "Captain" and "Leader" by Head Coach Brad Jeffcoat, it's a title Bridges is proud to accept. "This is my third year on varsity and I'm ready for the opportunity to lead my team," he said. New Dealership May Be Coming To Orange
A new car dealership will be built off Highway 62 South of Interstate 10 in Orange on the acreage known as Eagle Point. The City of Orange Economic Development Corporation will be spending up to $425,000 to build a boulevard into the acreage as an effort to attract more businesses, including a possible big box chain store. Health Inspector Hands Out Six Perfect Scores
Mold, live roaches, spiders, and faulty hand-washing stations were among the problems Orange County Health Inspector James Scales found at restaurants and food businesses. The Star and Crescent Moon Cafe in Shangri La Gardens was one of six getting perfect scores. And an ice cream truck could be traveling through the county. Scales made a pre-opening inspection for Terrell's Ice Cream mobile unit. The Orange City Council recently adjusted ordinances to allow ice cream trucks for the first time in decades. Early Voting Still Heavy On Day Two
Early voting Tuesday surpassed the numbers on Monday as people took advantage of the extended hours. The Orange County Elections Administration Office reported another 3,014 people voted in person, with 86 more mail-in ballots counted. The county now has a total of 6,886 early votes with 5,409 in person and 1,477 mail-in. Yesterday, the box at the Orange Public Library had 1,002 voters, the Bridge City Public Works Building had 729, the Raymond Gould Community Center in Vidor had 904, and the Mauriceville Volunteer Fire Department had 379. The season is entering crunch time for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears. Each week carries playoff ramifications. Police Raid Three Stores For Gambling
Tuesday night the Orange Police Department and the Orange County Sheriffs Office, along with other agencies, raided three stores for illegal gambling. The Shell store across the street from WalMart on Edgar Brown Dr., and the two convenience stores to the south and west of Walgreens on 16th St. were raided simultaneously around 6:30pm. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said they executed three search warrants for organized criminal activity as all three are being accused of illegal gambling. County Has To Take Out A Loan
The county will be taking a loan from Wells Fargo to help cover expenses for the next two to three months at the Orange County Courthouse. The Commissioners Court approved Tuesday authorizing the issuance of $8 million in a loan. The action required the recommendation of County Auditor Pennee Schmitt which she gave. County Treasurer Christy Khoury had been investigating the best deals for the county and determined the best option was with Wells Fargo to pay a total interest rate of 3.4865 percent. The regular season came to an end Tuesday with LCM, Orangefield and Deweyville making the playoffs. Vidor will have a play-in game with Dayton to decide fourth place in their district. The LCM Lady Bears finished third in the district after a straight set win over Silsbee Tuesday at The Grove.
