The Orange City Council Tuesday unanimously approved the preliminary plat for the Cypresswood Village Phase II. The subdivision is off Highway 87 South near FM 105. Public Works Director Jim Wolf said the city and Orange County Drainage District have been working with ITEX, the subdivision's developer, to assure proper drainage and that runoff does not affect existing neighborhoods. Wolf said plans include a detention pond. The council also voted to buy the Orange Police Department two 2018 Ford F-150 pickup trucks from Sabine River Ford in Orange. Tuesday Playoff Volleyball Results
The Orangefield Lady Bobcats traveled to Jasper Tuesday and drove home bi-district champs after a four set win over Diboll. OF improves to 30-9 and will face Anderson-Shiro in the second round of the 3A playoffs on Thursday at Crosby HS at 7pm. Shiro, the champs of 23-3A, beat Van Vleck in straight sets. The Vidor Lady Pirates made the playoffs for the first time in school history with Coach Melissa Story leading them. But they fell to Friendswood in straight sets and end their historic season 24-16. The Bridge City Cardinals lost to the pre-district favorite Lumberton last week. Coach Allen DeShazo added the Cardinals may have lost the services of one of their sophomores. Austin Richardson has a possible ankle sprain. Young players are seeing a lot of playing time for Bridge City. In the game with Lumberton seven Cardinal freshmen saw action. Ashes Sold At Garage Sale
An 80-year-old Little Cypress woman is hoping to get the ashes of her daughter and husband back. The ashes, one set in a green and blue urn similar to the colors above, and the other in a brown square container, were sold at a moving sale when the woman was in intensive care at an out-of-town hospital. The garage sale was three or four weekends ago at 8129 Canterbury Drive in the Country Squire subdivision off Highway 87 North. HOT Funds Distributed At CC
Seventeen sponsors were awarded money from Hotel Occupancy Tax Funding Tuesday by the Commissioners Court. The Hotel Occupancy Tax or HOT funds will be distributed in Fiscal Year 2018-2019 totaling $214,362 dollars. The Hotel Occupancy Tax Committee headed by Jessica Hill of the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) made its recommendations to the Court during a public hearing earlier Tuesday morning. Hill and the members of the Commissioners Court went over the requests and increased the recommended allocations by about $26,000. Shots Fired Off Ridgemont
Gunshots were fired Monday evening at a house in the Ridgemont subdivision, but no one was injured. Orange police are trying to piece together what happened. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said people have given "wildly conflicting stories." Police were called to the 3700 block of Ridgemont Drive about 5:40 p.m. Enmon said a man living in the house said he fired at a man at his door. He told officers the man was coming to assault him. Cypresswood Ready For Phase Two
The Cypresswood Village subdivision has grown so much ITEX is ready to develop the second phase. The Orange City Council on Tuesday will have a special called meeting to hold a public hearing on the plat. The subdivision is on Highway 87 South near FM 105. Two apartment complexes by ITEX are nearby. One complex is for low-to-moderate-income families and the other is full market apartment. The area is in the Bridge City school district. County Holds Tax Abatement Workshop
A workshop Monday night on possible changes to the tax abatement policy in Orange County filled the Commissioners Courtroom. Mayors, city officials, port district commissioners, school superintendents, and business leaders from across the county attended the one hour meeting. Those in attendance were for all intent unanimous in their opinion that restrictions on the tax abatement policy would hurt growth in Orange County not help it. When choosing a king and queen students were asked to consider who exemplifies leadership and Christ like qualities in their everyday life.
