Dozens of people came to honor former Orange mayor Essie Bellfield as the downtown "Meals on Wheels" building was named in her honor. Mayor Larry Spears Jr. quoted City Councilor Annette Pernell in saying "we must pay respects and honor" people "while they are still with us." Bellfield was one of the first women elected to the Orange City Council and then became the only woman and the first African-American to serve as mayor. Mustangs Maul Huntington 76-3
Renaldo Rose returned the opening kick off for a touchdown and that set the tone for the WOS Mustangs as they cruised to a 76-3 win over Huntington Thursday night in 4A D2 bi-district round action. The win was the most points scored in a playoff game for the storied Mustangs and it tied the mark for margin of victory. The 2016 State Champs opened the playoffs with a 73-0 win over Tarkington. Vending Truck Rules Amended
The rules for ice cream vending trucks have already been amended. The Orange City Council agreed to have vendors go through a criminal background check and pay a permit fee. When the council two months ago passed new rules to allow ice cream and snow cone vending trucks in neighborhoods, District 1 Councilor Pat Pullen asked about whether the vendors should have a background check because they will be around children. Chilly night Wednesday but the weather finally allowed the Lions Club Carnival to get underway after missing all of 2017 because of Harvey. The carvinal continues thru Saturday. Stark Museum of Art Celebrates the Holiday Season
The Stark Museum of Art celebrates the holiday season with an encore exhibit of Spirit of Bethlehem: The Boehm Porcelain Nativity. The exhibit will be on view in the Museum’s Lobby beginning on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 and continuing through January 5, 2019. Spirit of Bethlehem tells the Christmas story through the figures of a sixteen-piece Nativity scene in white bisque porcelain. Election Sets Voter Turnout Record
The Commissioners Court approved the canvass results of last week’s general election. Elections Administrator Tina Barrow presented results which were a record turnout for a non-presidential election with 29,712 voters casting ballots. The results almost matched the ballots cast in the 2016 presidential election. This was the last election where ballots will have straight party voting done. Over 17,000 people took advantage of the straight party voting opportunity with 83 percent of them voting for Republicans.
