Officiating will be Reverend Keith Tilley, of Faith United Methodist Church in Orange. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange. County Bus Fares See Increase
The fares to use the Orange County Transportation buses will be increasing in January. The Commissioners Court approved Wednesday the new fares recommended by the Director of Transportation for the county Janell Dischler. The increase in the fares puts Orange County more in line with the fees charged by other counties using transportation departments. The fare increases must be advertised for 30 days before they go into effect. The new fares will be effective January 15, 2019. Orange Extends Debris Pickup
The City of Orange has extended debris pickup from Harvey with storm-related trash needing to be out on the curb by February 1. City crews with grappler trucks will complete the rounds by February 23. City Council and City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre talked Tuesday about the continuing problems with storm debris four months after the flood. Oubre told the council that FEMA has agreed to reimburse the city 90 percent of the costs for picking up the debris until February 23. Woman Arrested For Drug Possession
A burglar alarm sounding in the middle of the day at a house led Orange police to arrest a Hamshire woman wanted on a parole violation warrant. In addition, she had marijuana, methamphetamine and dilaudid hidden in her bra. She also faces a charge of failure to identify after giving a false first name. Officer P. McDonald reported he went to a house in the 3700 block of Edgemont Drive at 11 a.m. because of the residential alarm. When he arrived, he saw two women in the yard. Pinehurst Sets Election For May 5
The City Council ordered the municipal election in Pinehurst to be held May 5. The council met Tuesday night and approved holding the election with the Orange County Election Administrator to supervise the voting. The position of mayor currently held by Pete Runnels and two alderperson positions, those held by Cynthia Adams and John Zerko will be on the ballot. Runnels has indicated he will run again for mayor. Area Runners Receive Elite Invitations
Three area runners have qualified for the Chevron Marathon and Aramco Half Marathon through Elite invitations. Michael Defee (left) will be running in the marathon while Joe Melanson and Billie Kay Melanson will be running the Aramco Half. This is the second year the trio have qualified for the prestigious seeding. The Chevron/Aramco event is January 14. Orange County is the recipient of the “Rebuild Texas Initiative” and the “National Disaster Displacement” grant which provides federal and state funds through Texas Workforce Solutions to provide jobs for people displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Before the spring semester even got started, a group of students and staff from the University of Indianapolis boarded a bus for Orange, Texas on a mission to provide hurricane relief. Hurricane Harvey has been out of the headlines for months, but the devastation from record flooding remains. Pro Tem Bonnin To Run Again
The West Orange City Council ordered on Monday the municipal election to be held on Saturday, May 5. Three at-large alderperson positions will be on the ballot. The positions of Mike Shugart, Shirley Bonnin, and Dale Dardeau expire in May.
