Hill Positive Going Into Year Two
For about two years Orange County has had an advocate working to bring businesses and industries here. Jessica Hill as the executive director of the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is putting the county’s many assets forward for future development. Hill grew up in Liberty, Texas, graduated from Texas A&M, before getting her master’s degree at Lamar, and her economic development training certification from the University of Oklahoma. WOS’ Teate, Vidor’s Ciccio WRS Finalists
The finalists for the Willie Ray Smith Award, celebrating the top offensive and defensive player from the 2017 high school football season, were announced Thursday. Orange County had two finalists on the defensive side of the ball. Davien Teate of West Orange-Stark and Joey Ciccio of Vidor were selected along with Newton's Corbin Foster and Donald Collins of West Brook. Orange Will Have Three Seats Open
People in Orange will be voting on three positions on the city council as the At-Large Position No. 6 currently held by Larry Spears will be open. City Council Tuesday called for the election of the at-large seat and salon owner Paul Burch filed for the position Wednesday morning. Spears has filed to run for mayor and the city charter requires him to give up the No. 6 seat. The May 5 general election has the seats of mayor and Single Member District No. 1 open because their three-year terms have ended. Commissioners Meet; Delinquent Taxes Down
The Commissioners Court heard some good news Tuesday on a reduction of the delinquent taxes in the county. Steve Bird with the law firm that handles the collection of delinquent taxes for Orange County and other entities in the county addressed the Commissioners. Bird informed the Court that there were about $3.8 million in delinquent taxes during the summer. That figure has been reduced to $3.2 million. Bird also shared that there had been over ten thousand delinquent accounts in the county at that time. Group Discusses Trailer Park
Tuesday afternoon representatives from multiple federal agencies met with state, county, and city officials to look at possible sites in Orange County for FEMA mobile home parks. The group first met at the courthouse to discuss the criteria for the future trailer parks in the county. County Judge Brint Carlton said the Texas General Land Office, the Army Corps of Engineers, and FEMA are surveying areas in the west end of the county and in Orange, Pinehurst, and Bridge City for possible trailer park sites. LSC-O enjoyed having Spurger High School and Silsbee Middle School come visit the LSCO campus recently. Students experienced the SIM lab in the Nursing Program, the shop for the new welding program, the lab for the EMS program, a classroom in the Process Technology program, made slime with the Pharmacy Technology instructors, and enjoyed time in the Dental Assisting lab. Coach Uses Bait-Making For Stress Relief
Terrebonne High School head football coach Gary Hill, a 1991 graduate of West Orange-Stark, spends most of his time designing football plays for his team. Once football season ends, though, Hill uses his creativity to enjoy another passion: fishing. Hill is an avid fisherman who prefers making his own fishing lures to buying them. Punishment In Bearden Trial Begins
A jury will decide the punishment for a 20-year-old who pleaded guilty to burglary in connection with the break-in and kidnapping of local lawyer Jim Sharon Bearden Jr. Testimony for the punishment of German Adalid Jorjas-Benitez started Tuesday before 128th District Court Judge Courtney Arkeen. The procedure will continue on Wednesday. Jorjas-Benitez was one of three men, all undocumented from Honduras, indicted for felony offenses in connection with the crime.
