Fr. Sinclair Oubre, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church, visits St. Mary Catholic School to say Mass once a month for students and staff. When time permits, Fr. Youth Recognized During Council
The Orange City Council paid tribute to enterprising youth during a meeting this week. Mayor Pro Tem Larry Spears invited three girls, 14-year-old Nia Hodges, 14-year-old Nia Lewis and 10-year-old London Stroud to talk to the council about their endeavors. London Stroud started her company, London Lane, when she was 8 years old. She designs and paints craft signs and decor to sell. Her crafts can be seen at Art in the Park and other community events. Kidnapper Benitez Gets 60 Years
A jury Thursday morning decided a 20-year-old man should spend 60 years in state prison and pay a $10,000 fine for breaking into the home of lawyer Jim Sharon Bearden Jr. and kidnapping him. German Borjas-Benitez, hung his head down as Judge Courtney Arkeen read the jury's decision. He had pleaded guilty to felony burglary with intent to kidnap and asked for probation or a short term in prison. He faced a maximum of 99 years to life in prison for the crime. Chief Justice From Orange Passes
Adele Oglesby Hedges, a Stark High graduate who went on to become a lawyer and Chief Justice of the 14th Texas Court of Appeals, died in Houston Wednesday at the age of 70. She and her husband, Dan Hedges, who is also a lawyer, were leaders in the Houston law community for many years. She was born and grew up in Orange. While a student at the old Stark High School, she was drum major of the Tiger Band. She played flute and was selected to the all-state band. In addition she was an honor graduate. Remains Identfied
On October 17th, human remains were located in a wooded area behind an old shopping center located in the 2600 block of MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst. According to the Orange County Sheriffs Office, it has been confirmed that the remains are that of 22 year old Nathaniel Allen Anderson who had been reported missing in early June of 2017. After an exhaustive investigation into Anderson’s whereabouts, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received information that led them to the general area of 2600 MacArthur, where the remains were eventually uncovered. Long Shadow Exhibit Saturday
The Stark Museum of Art is opening a new exhibit which features its roots in Orange. The Long Shadow: The Lutcher-Stark Lumber Dynasty exhibit opens Saturday, January 27 at the museum. The exhibit features historic photographs and documents which tell the story of the Lutcher and Stark families at work particularly with the lumber industry in the Orange community.
