OF FCCLA Attends Conference
Officers from Orangefield's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter attended the FCCLA Region IV Conference in Galveston, Texas. Sponsor Kimberly Spears, as well as officers Ngoc Phan, Britney Patillo, Hannah Blaine, and Randi Wallace attended this event. Students competed in Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events, Family and Consumer Science Assessments (FCSA), Leadership Tracks, and more. Candidates Set For May Election
Local dentist Dr. Travis Miller filed Friday to run against businessman Keith Wallace for the Orange County Navigation and Port District Commission Precinct 1 seat. That leaves the port district with two contested races. Friday was the deadline for filing for the May 5 elections for city councils, school boards and special districts. The only other Friday filing was for the Pinehurst City Council with incumbent Cynthia Adams filing for her at-large seat. Pinehurst has no contested races and will be able to cancel its election. Man Arrested, Suspect In Disturbance
Orange police Thursday afternoon arrested a man considered a suspect in an assault that occurred Wednesday afternoon in a house that caught fire less than three hours later. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said a 13-year-old was injured when a brick thrown inside the house at 1307 Clairmont Drive hit her arm. The arm was not broken. Police were called to the house for an aggravated assault involving a family at 1:22 p.m. Wednesday. The house was reported on fire at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday. Bobcats Win Mixed Doubles
The Bobcats participated in the Kountze Varsity Invitational this past week. Mixed Doubles, Luke Truncale and Cameron Choate advanced to the finals in the B division with wins over Kirbyville and Kountze. They defeated Bridge City in the championship round to bring home the gold. After a loss to PNG, girls doubles, Taylor Decker and Megan Ibeck went on to win consolation in the A division with wins over Silsbee and Kelly. Jennifer Swift advanced to the quarterfinals in Girls A Singles. George Paul Nevarez, 67, of Orange, Texas, passed away on February 16, 2018, at his home. Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on February 22, 1950, he was the son of Nestor T. Nevarez and Lydia S. (Fitch) Nevarez. George graduated with honors from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He served our country in the U.S. Navy.
