The Orangefield Sophisticats participated this weekend in the American Dance and Drill Team Regional in Galveston. The Sophisticats had an unbelievable showing and earned numerous awards. The team received the following awards; Sweepstakes/ Gussie Nell Davis Award, judges’ awards for jazz, prop, hip-hop, contemporary and production. The team was also awarded a platinum for technique/precision/ choreography/presentation and finished in first place in the extra small school division. James “Jim” Wallace, 87, of Bridge City, Texas, passed away on March 4, 2018, in Beaumont, Texas. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Claybar Funeral Homes in Bridge City. Officiating will be Reverend Alan Wallace. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange. St. Mary Catholic School’s Student Council participated in the Texas Association of Student Council’s District 17 Spring Convention. Under the direction of Advisor, Angie Smith, the group once again received Sweepstakes recognition. Bryant Signs Three Year Deal
The Falcons have agreed to terms with kicker Matt Bryant, the all-time leading scorer in franchise history. Reports are that Bryant will earn $10.5 million with a signing bonus of $2 million. Incentives can push the total value of the deal to a max of $12 million. The two parties have agreed upon a three-year extension, preventing Bryant, 42, from hitting free agency on March 14 and keeping him with the Falcons through the 2020 season. Bobcats Compete In Emory, Texas
Orangefield High School's UIL Academic Team traveled to Emory, Texas to compete in the Rains High School Last Chance UIL Academic Invitational meet on Saturday, March 3rd. The team took Friday to travel and stopped for a tour of Tyler Junior College. The tour was given by a 2017 graduate of Orangefield High School, Savannah Grant. Twenty-six students competed on Saturday and brought home 24 medals. I10 Accident Kills Driver
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a one vehicle crash on the interstate Saturday in Orange County that killed a man from Spring, Texas. Sergeant Stephanie Davis with the DPS reported the crash occurred at about 5:00 PM Saturday on Interstate 10 near mile marker 859. The preliminary investigation by troopers at the scene indicate a Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling westbound on the interstate when for unknown reasons the vehicle struck the inside concrete wall and then traveled back across the westbound lanes striking the outside concrete wall. County Building Update
It has been six months since Tropical Storm Harvey hit the county. Many citizens are still getting their residences and businesses repaired or even rebuilt. Orange County government facilities are in the same condition. Fortunately, the county had insurance on its properties through the Texas Association of Counties (TAC). Kurt Guidry the Maintenance Director for the county said there are 15 buildings his department is overseeing the work to restore to their pre-Harvey status using insurance to pay for repairs. Council To Discuss Natatorium Future
The Orange Natatorium is out-dated and may need to be demolished, but the city of Orange could build a $1 million water park on the site. City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre gave a brief run-down about the natatorium at a city council meeting in February after asked about whether the city is lining up lifeguards for the summer. He said the last couple of years the city raised the pay of lifeguards to hire them, but the woman who has worked as pool manager is not coming back this year. The LCM Lady Bears finished the SETX Invitational Tournament undefeated after two wins Saturday. They shutout Nederland 4-0 thanks to the pitching of Renna Toomey who threw a 4 hit shutout. Jonee Villanueva had 2 RBI's. They also beat Huffman 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Bailey Frenzel and Megan Peveto homered. Olivia Leavings was 2-4 with 2 RBI's.
