Apartment Fire Strands Residents
A fire early Monday morning damaged four of the six units in an apartment complex in Mauriceville. The fire was in the 8300 block of State Highway 12. Orange County Emergency Services District #3 received the first call of the fire at about 2:30 AM Monday. A cause has not been reported. Six home dates and a trip to Texas Tech highlight the 2018 Lamar University football schedule announced head coach Mike Schultz Tuesday afternoon. Orange County voters will go to party primary races Tuesday. Locally, the Republican Party has the only contested races. County Judge Brint Carlton is being challenged by Dean T. Crooks. Some Voting Boxes Have Changed
Voting boxes for the Republican and Democratic party primary races will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, but some voters may see changes in their boxes. Tropical Storm Harvey flooded some of the public places where voting has been conducted. Some of those were changed for the November elections and are now back to their original site. However, some boxes are being permanently changed. Orange County Elections Administrator Tina Barrow said large red signs have been placed at all the former sites that are not being used. Weekend Police Reports
A man who was stabbed Friday night but refused to cooperate with police is facing misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and resisting arrest. However, 38-year-old Christopher James Declouet ended up at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment. Orange police went to a house in the 1900 block of Robin Avenue in Greenway Park at 10:45 p.m. Friday. Police were sent to assist with emergency medical personnel who were called. SRA Closes Six Gates
The Sabine River Authority has closed six spillway gates at Toledo Bend Reservoir, leaving only five open at one foot each. The dam with two generators operating is now releasing a total of 19,410 cubic feet of water per second. That's a decrease of 16,000 cubic feet per second of what was released last week. The Sabine River at Deweyville Monday evening was down to 25.5 feet, considered the minor flood stage. Flood stage is 24 feet. WO Cancels General Election
The City of West Orange cancelled its general election, but there will still be a special election in May for citizens of West Orange. The City Council declared Monday since there were no contested races the candidates would be elected by acclamation. Shirley Bonnin, Dale Dardeau, and Mike Shugart will retain their seats on the West Orange City Council. There will be several charter amendments on the ballot for the May 5 special election which the citizens will consider for approval.
