The Bridge City Cardinals held off the Orangefield Bobcats 2-0 to wrap up the district title, the 26th in schools history. The Cards scored both runs in the third. Mason Gonzales walked Schuyler Thibodaux and balked him to second. An error on the first pitch to Justyn Romero scored Ryan Ellis who was courtesy running for Thibodaux. Gavin Green then drove in Romero with a base hit. Johnny Armstrong replaced Gonzales in the fourth and kept BC off the board. Manuel Leading Cowboy Bass Team
The McNeese State fishing team of Trent Manuel of Orange and Alex Murry of Moss Bluff finished in 7th place out of 266 teams in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Southern Series on Lake Pickwick in Florence, Alabama this past weekend. The duo weighed in a 3 day total weight of 49lb 2ozs. Trent and Alex's 7th place finish qualifies their team for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Nation Championship on Tenkiller Lake in Oklahoma in July. Crooks Interim County Judge
Dean Crooks will be the interim County Judge for Orange County. The Commissioners Court needed two closed sessions with its legal counsel and two votes before appointing Crooks to the position of County Judge. Following about a 40-minute meeting with Assistant County Attorney Denise Gremillion, the Commissioners reconvened. John Gothia made a motion to appoint Crooks as the interim county judge. When the vote was taken only Gothia and Johnny Trahan voted yes. Go Texan Scholarship Benefit May 5
The Orange County Go Texan Committee is having a benefit Saturday, May 5, to raise money for its scholarship fund. The event will be at the Orange Boat Club, 2206 DuPont Drive from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The band Country Outkasts will perform and crawfish will be sold. Drug Take Back Day Is Saturday
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held at the City of Orange Police Department, located at 201 8th Street, on Saturday, April 28, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Turn in your unused or expired prescription medication for safe disposal. Pills can be dropped off, no questions asked. Liquids and needles cannot be accepted. The goal of the campaign is to make sure that prescription pills don’t fall into the wrong hands and end up leading to addiction. No Uniforms Required for 2018-19 at WOC
The West Orange-Cove ISD School Board has voted to do away with Standardized Dress for Pre-K thru 8th grade. This means uniforms will no longer be required. The district wanted parents to know now before the kids got out of class for the summer. The decision was supported by a survey of both teachers and parents. The District said the dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. The school has a legitimate interest in requiring proper dress and personal grooming from every student. Wilhelm Learning To Help Others
On March 24, 2018, Deweyville graduate and Texas State student Brooke Wilhelm, participated in a workshop that assisted immigrants with the last step of obtaining their U.S. citizenship process. Wilhelm writes, As members of Enactus, several students volunteered with American Gateways to help and or translate the NR400 forms needed for immigrants to continue with getting their U.S. citizenship rights legally. OFISD Approves Armed Marshals
The Orangefield school board Monday night approved a program to have armed marshals or guardians in the schools. The marshals or guardians will be school employees who will be anonymous. "The reason the board initiated our marshal plan, or policy, is our local response time by our first responders, as told by our sheriff, is six or seven minutes. We don't feel like we want that kind of time to go by if there is an emergency in our school district," said Board President Dr. Ronald Risinger, a dentist.
