Dean Crooks received his oath of office as the interim County Judge of Orange County Wednesday in the Commissioners Courtroom. Crooks was appointed Tuesday by the Commissioners Court to serve as the replacement County Judge for Brint Carlton who resigned his office Sunday, April 22. Former County Judge and current mayor of Pinehurst Pete Runnels performed the swearing in ceremony. The City of Orange Convention & Visitors Bureau will be hosting the 5th Annual “Shootout on the Sabine” DSRA Drag Boat Races. The event will be held Saturday, May 19 from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. and Sunday, May 20 from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. at the City of Orange Boat Ramp. There will be no charge to attend this family friendly event. Hand Gets Two Years In Prison
A jury in state district court Wednesday found a 53-year-old man guilty of criminally negligent homicide for the 2017 shooting death of his wife, 24-year-old Megan Smith. The jury also decided to give a punishment of two years in state jail plus a $10,000 fine to Robert Hand. The criminally negligent homicide conviction is a lesser charge. Hand was indicted and on trial for manslaughter, a second degree felony, which carries a punishment of two to 20 years in state prison, plus a fine. Orange Council Approves $175,000 Grant
The Orange City Council Tuesday approved paying the new First State Bank an economic development grant of $175,000 to pay for infrastructure. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the work has been done. The city will reimburse the costs of the approved work after it passes inspection. The council and the Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors approved the grant a year ago. The process included public hearings on the expenditure. Vidor Man Shot Dead After Disturbance
On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at approximately 10:32 P.M., officers of the Vidor Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Alamo in reference to a call of shots fired. The caller stated he approached a disturbance in the roadway and a male charged at him. The caller stated he shot the male. Officers quickly arrived on-scene and secured the area.
