Orange Shuffles City Council
Larry Spears Jr. officially became mayor of Orange Tuesday morning as friends and family cheered. However, not everyone in the City Council Auditorium was enthusiastic. After the ceremonies, Spears' opponent in the May 5 election talked about how he thinks city officials broke the city charter. The council canvassed the votes before the oaths of office were given. Spears officially had 944 votes to 248 for Charles Ray Thomas. Boat Races May 19-20
The City of Orange Convention & Visitors Bureau will be hosting the 5th Annual “Shootout on the Sabine” DSRA Drag Boat Races. The event will be held Saturday, May 19 from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. and Sunday, May 20 from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. at the City of Orange Boat Ramp. There will be no charge to attend this family friendly event. In an effort to promote tourism, this event will include 50 to 60 racers from Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. WO Councilmembers Sworn In
The City of West Orange swore in three members of the City Council on Monday. Shirley Bonnin, Dale Dardeau, and Mike Shugart, Senior received their oaths of office from City Attorney Rex Peveto. The three incumbents were the only candidates and allowed West Orange to cancel the general election. Bonnin was elected by the council to serve another term as Mayor Pro-Tempore. Aggravated Robbery At Honey Stop
On Monday, May 14, 2018, at 9:41 pm, Officers with the Orange Police Department, where dispatched to the Honey Stop located at 1012 Park Ave. in reference to an aggravated robbery. Officers arrived on scene in less than one minute, but the suspect fled the store prior to their arrival. Reportedly, the suspect was last seen running east on Park Ave. After a search of the area, the suspect was not located. The suspect was described as a black male, believed to be wearing women’s clothing. Orange Weekend Police Reports
A man was shot Saturday evening during an argument inside a house in the Old Orange Historic District. Orange police said his injury was not life-threatening. Police took the woman who was inside the house at the time to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas for a mental evaluation. Police were called to the house in the 800 block of Cypress Avenue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Officers reported the Orange Fire Department treated the man at the scene and he was later transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed.
