McCorquodale On Sub That Was Never Found
A marker in Evergreen Cemetery in the section for a prominent local family does not show a grave. Instead it is a memorial. The body of Navy Reserve Lt.jg David Bennett McCorquodale has never been found. Neither has the World War II submarine on which he was serving. He is one of dozens of young men from Orange who lost their lives during the war. Several of them are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, though a survey has not been made. Council Meets For Workshop May 31
Once again, the Orange City Council will talk about spending $8 million on long-range projects. The council will have a public workshop on Thursday, May 31, at 9 a.m. in the Ira Williamson Meeting Room of the Orange Public Library. The workshop agenda also has "possible action" on the projects. For three years, City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre has told the council the city in 2019 will pay off bonds for the police station and fire station on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Maxine Cooley Slaydon, 89, from Bridge City, Texas, passed on May 26, 2018, at Oak Grove Rehabilitation Center, from complications. She was born on July 1, 1928, in Singer, Louisiana, to Iutress and Beatrice Gregg Cooley. She was preceded in death in 1999, by her husband, James Oscar Slaydon, to whom she was married 54 years. Maxine graduated from Singer High School and Vincent Business School in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She worked as a bookkeeper for banks and the power company. ATM Break-In On 16th Street
Orange police are investigating the break-in of the Capital One ATM at Northway Shopping Center, 3738 North 16th Street. Officers reported finding the door open at 2:56 a.m. Wednesday and cash appeared to be missing. Thursday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Board of Trustees named Stacey Brister the lone finalist for the District's Superintendent-Elect position. She will assume that position on July 1 and will move into the Superintendency in January 2019.
