Henry Wins NCAA High Jump Title
Junior Alexus Henry became the first UTA woman ever to win an individual national championship, taking the title in the women’s high jump at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday evening at historic Hayward Field. Henry, from Bridge City, was one of three competitors to clear 5-11 ½ (1.82m), but won by virtue of having the fewest misses at the winning height. Hackney Leads Top 12 Into Sunday
Once again Greg Hackney from Gonzales, La. leads the Sabine River Challenge after Day 3. Hackney finished with 12-14 to become the only angler to catch a double digit bag all three days. Saturday's weigh-in was delayed 30 minutes by a storm that blew through at the Orange Boat Ramp. Sales Tax Strong In Orange County
Orange County and the main cities continue to get more money from sales taxes, showing a strong local economy. The Texas Comptroller's Office this week sent payments covering sales for April. The payments are: Bridge City (1.5 percent tax): $144,185 for the month. $912,300 for the first four months of the year compared to $690,066 last year, a 32.2 percent increase. Orange (1.5 percent tax): $416,628 for the month. $2.8 million for the first four months compared to $2.2 million last year, a 27.5 percent increase. WOCCISD approves pay increase
The West Orange – Cove School Board has approved the 2018-2019 Teacher Pay Scale, which includes a minimum $2,000 increase for all full-time teachers. Based on years of experience or step, some teachers may see a larger increase in pay. Additionally, the Board has approved stipends for teachers in hard to fill areas. Stipends of $7,000 are available for secondary math and Spanish teachers. A $3,000 stipend is available for secondary science teachers. Hackney Extends Lead On Day 2
Greg Hackney, fishing north of the I-10 bridge, extended his lead on Day Two of the Sabine River Challenge with an 11-15 sack of bass giving him a total of 28-2. That's almost four and a half pounds over second place Steve Kennedy of Alabama who had a monster day with a 16-5 bag and a 23-10 total. Four plus pound lead is huge on the Sabine but as Kennedy showed, no two days are the same as he bettered his first day total by nine pounds. Construction of a new fast food restaurant plus Harvey-related repairs of an apartment complex led the building permits issued by the city of Orange during May. A new Burger King is being built at Anchor Construction at 2302 Highway 62. The project is valued at $800,000 on the building permit. The Fox Run Apartments, 2600 Allie Payne Road, received a permit for a $2.58 million rebuilding project after the storm. The contractor is Construction Zone of Texas.
