The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce held its second annual Father of the Year Contest and received several nominations, all of which were for very deserving fathers. After careful consideration by the Father of the Year Committee, David Ess was awarded the honor. Ess was presented his gifts at the Bridge City Chamber’s June Networking Coffee hosted by Granger Chevrolet where Mayor David Rutledge read aloud the City of Bridge City’s official proclamation naming David Ess as 2018 Father of the Year. In the early morning of Sunday, June 10th, we lost our family matriarch, Claire Covington. Though she fought with courage, dignity and grace our Mom’s long battle with cancer ended. Her final days were spent with her husband of 65 years, our Dad, Don. He would not leave her side. Our mother loved life at every stage. She was born to Robert W. Fogal and Maurine (Mitchell) Fogal on September 7, 1935 in Beaumont, Texas. OC Sheriffs Calls June 4-11
A homeowner in rural Little Cypress Sunday morning held a man in his house at gunpoint and called the sheriff's office about a burglary. But the suspected burglar turned out to be a worker for a contractor. Orange County Sheriff's Investigations Captain Cliff Hargrave said that kind of call has not been unusual during the past few months. As people rebuild after Tropical Storm Harvey flooded nearly 28,000 houses in Orange County, homeowners sometimes mistake workers for criminals. OC Buying New Voting Machines
Orange County will be getting new voting machines in time for the November general election. The Commissioners Court approved the purchase Tuesday at the request of Election Administrator Tina Barrow. Most of the current voting machines are more than 13 years old, are not suited for election software, and have no security measures built in them to prevent voter fraud according to Barrow. Orange EDC Helping Business
Performance ATV Powersports will be moving to a new $1.3 million building with help from the City of Orange Economic Development Corporation. The EDC Board of Directors and the Orange City Council Tuesday approved a $192,000 grant and other economic incentives. The land is along Interstate 10 west of FM 1442, where the city limits currently end. The company is asking the city to annex the land, which makes it eligible for the package. Alcohol License Moratorium
Businesses in the City of Pinehurst may not be able to get a new license to sell alcohol for six months. At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, City Administrator Robbie Hood indicated the city’s current Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance which was updated in 2010 needs revision to be in line with policies of the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission (TABC) and called for a six-month moratorium on any new alcohol licenses being issued. Thibodeaux Leaves Seat For Bench
The City of West Orange got a new judge Monday, but lost an alderman. Mayor Roy McDonald appointed Carl Thibodeaux as the new municipal judge for West Orange. Upon accepting the appointment, Thibodeaux resigned from his position on the City Council. The position of municipal judge became vacant with the death of Gene Roberts in February. Thibodeaux is excited about taking the new position of West Orange municipal judge.
