A generator and compressor that were stolen in Deweyville was recovered at a pawn shop in Orange. The theft was reported to the Newton County Sheriff's Office on June 18. According to The Newton County News, Deputy Chris Kite found the items in the pawn shop and was able to identify them by "significant markings," the newspaper said. The deputy got a search warrant for the pawn ticket and then was able to make an arrest. Mitchell Crooks, Jr., of Deweyville was arrested for Class A misdemeanor theft. Pinehurst To Update Alcohol Ordinance
Pinehurst will be getting a new ordinance to cover the sale of alcoholic beverages in the city. Charles Falls with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission spoke to the Pinehurst City Council Tuesday evening. Falls reviewed the current alcoholic beverage ordinance for the council. He pointed out numerous statues in the ordinance that were either confusing or conflicting to the purpose of the ordinance. Orange County Sheriff's Office Calls July 2-8 Rural thefts and burglaries are continuing in the unincorporated areas of the county. Last week, the sheriff's office investigated five thefts, three burglaries of a habitation, one burglary of a building, two cases of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and one burglary of a vehicle. Repairs to the marble façade on the Orange County Courthouse should be almost completely covered by grant funds. The Commissioners Court held a workshop Tuesday morning with the Texas Historical Commission and HDR which has been the county’s architect advisory firm concerning renovations to the historic courthouse. The owners of the Boardwalk Grille will be responsible for paying property taxes on the building and contents, but the land belonging to the city of Orange will be exempt from the taxes. OC Drainage District Receives $500K
The Orange County Drainage District is getting $500,000 worth of state help to plan, design and build a drainage improvement project. The plans also include removing debris left in Adams and Cow bayous after Tropical Storm Harvey. The Texas Water Development Board met Monday and approved $500,000 in loan forgiveness from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.
