Johnson Named Lone Finalist At LSCO
Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall, Ph.D., today named Thomas A. Johnson, Ed.D., sole finalist in the Lamar State College-Orange presidential search. Dr. Johnson, currently assistant vice president of student affairs at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, was chosen from a field of more than 30 candidates who applied during a national search. For almost forty years the Southeast Texas Hospice has served the terminally ill and their families in Orange and Jefferson counties. Mary McKenna with Southeast Texas Hospice said that when they started people did not die in their homes. Orange Council Honors Citizens
Almost half the Orange City Council business Tuesday was honoring people, including former mayor Essie Bellfield. The council unanimously voted to name the downtown community center in her honor. Also, the council and Mayor Larry Spears Jr. declared July 29, 2018, as "Michael Christian Gobert Day" in Orange to honor the young man who died in an accident while at college earlier this year. Hard To Believe No Injuries
At approximately 12:45p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on Interstate 10, near Womack, in Orange County. Preliminary reports indicate that a truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling westbound on Interstate 10. According to the driver, he lost control of the vehicle when the right rear tires began to vibrate. The 18-wheeler struck the outside concrete barrier before coming to rest off the roadway. Hiring Freeze Eliminated By Commissioners
A mandatory six-week hiring freeze for filling job vacancies at the Courthouse was eliminated Tuesday. The policy had been implemented four years ago during a budget crunch caused by a large number of employees retiring and department heads then hiring new employees immediately. The Commissioners Court voted 4 to 1 to do away with the policy. Commissioner John Gothia made the motion to eliminate the policy which was approved by Commissioner in February 2014. Another lawn mower was stolen from a garage when the resident left the garage door open. Monday about 9 a.m. a man who lives in the 2000 block of Wildwood Avenue called Orange police to report his Murray walk-behind mower was missing. He had left the garage door open while he ran an errand. A lawnmower was stolen last week from a garage with an open door while the residents were inside the house.
