Decisions To Be Made From Workshops
The Commissioners Court will decide next Tuesday whether Orange County will provide its own janitorial workers or will go to a new commercial janitorial company to clean the Courthouse and other county buildings. During a budget workshop Thursday, the Court discussed how much it would cost for the county to hire employees to clean the buildings of county government compared to hiring a commercial company to do it. Vidor Men Charged With Multiple Thefts
Two men from Vidor have been arrested and charged in Jasper County with multiple thefts and more charges could be coming. According to KJAS Radio, 49-year-old Willie Cowart (right) and 39-year-old Jesse McDaniel are accused of stealing two brand new trolling motors from Jasper Outboard on Highway 96 North on Wednesday, July 18th and then fleeing from officers in a black Ford Mustang. Although the crime occurred in Jasper, it was Jasper County Constable Niles Nichols and Jasper County Lieutenant Morgan Downs who captured the suspects. Orange Ends Harvey Pickup Aug. 17
People living in the city of Orange must have Harvey-related debris from home damage to the curb by August 17, City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre told the city council Tuesday. FEMA is supposed to reimburse the city 90 percent of the costs of the debris pickup with an end deadline of August 23. Oubre said the debris needs to be out by August 17 so the city's grapple truck assigned for debris pickup can get to it. He said a property owner who has not gotten debris out by that date will have to have a contractor take care of it or make other arrangements. Cooper’s Gully Receives More Concrete
After years of working, waiting and worrying, the city of Orange will be lining more of Cooper's Gully with concrete. The city council Tuesday voted to award a contract for $2.85 million of work. The money is coming from a federal Hurricane Ike recovery grant. The storm came 10 years ago in September. Public Works Director Jim Wolf has worked in recent years to get environmental approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which originally rejected the plan. CC Workshops Continue Wednesday
Orange County provides health insurance for its employees paying 100 percent of the coverage. Employees’ dependents can also be covered at the discretion of the employee, but the county only pays 40 percent of the cost. The Commissioners Court held a workshop Wednesday to discuss increasing the county’s share of the coverage for health insurance for employees’ dependents. County Judge Dean Crooks recommended the workshop be done to determine the viability of the county paying more of dependent insurance coverage. Tisdale Retiring From Bridge City
The City of Bridge City will be getting a new secretary before the end of the year. Sherry Tisdale who has served Bridge City for many years as the city secretary has announced her intentions to retire on October 31. The City Council held a called meeting on Tuesday which included a closed executive session for it to deliberate restructuring the city administration with Tisdale’s anticipated retirement.
