The final budget workshop on Thursday has helped finalize the numbers for next year’s budget in Bridge City. City Manager Jerry Jones said the budget shows an increase over the current year’s. The 2018-19 budget will be $8,223,772. This year’s budget was over $7.8 million. Capital outlay for next year includes the purchase of two police cars and two trucks for public works. All the city employees in Bridge City will get a 3 percent pay raise next year. Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced today that the team has re-signed restricted free agent center Clint Capela. Capela was selected by Houston with the 25th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He was runner-up for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award this past season after averaging career-highs of 13.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.85 blocks. Accident Slows Eastbound Traffic Friday
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a three vehicle crash Friday afternoon around 1pm on IH-10 near MM 878. The preliminary crash investigation indicates at approximately 12:30 p.m., a 2017 Chevrolet SUV was traveling east on IH-10 and failed to control speed and struck a 2008 GMC pickup from behind. The GMC pick then struck a 2016 Jeep from behind that was reportedly stopped due to other traffic. The driver of the Chevrolet is identified as Matthew Walston, 27, from Jacksonville, TX. Darrell Huffman, 57, of Newton, has been booked into the Newton County Jail on Capital Murder in the death of 59 year old Dora Lynn Johnson. Her body was discovered in the remains of the burned house on Count Road 3038 in Newton County. The investigation so far has indicated that Darrell Huffman caused the death of Dora Johnson by fire. 16th St at I10 Closed During Night Next Week
The Texas Department of Transportation will be closing the Interstate 10 overpass at 16th Street for four nights next week. The closing means through traffic on 16th Street will have to be re-routed along the frontage roads. The closings will be from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the nights of Tuesday, July 31, through Friday, August 3. People traveling south on 16th Street will need to turn right onto the westbound frontage road and turn at the Adams Bayou Turnaround. Burke Guilty Of Continuous Sexual Abuse
A jury this week decided a 61-year-old man should spend 50 years in prison for the continuous sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl. The jury first found Charles Edward Burke guilty of the charges and then decided on the punishment. The trial was in 163rd State District Court before Judge Dennis Powell. Assistant District Attorney Krispen Walker said evidence showed Burke sexually abused the girl between November 2015 and March 2016. He was living with the girl's family in North Vidor and was a relative of the child's stepfather.
