Newton Co. Sheriffs Report by Sheriff Billy Rowles First part of the week was ok. The last part not so good. Let’s see what it was all about. Sunday, we got a call reference to a self-inflicted gunshot victim. The man was deceased when we arrived. At the same time, we received a call of a man threatening to shoot himself. Non-profit Provides Wheelchair Ramps
The RISE Center in Beaumont, a local non-profit organization to help people with disabilities, has a grant to repair or replace home wheelchair ramps. The group, started in 1996, also serves Orange County. Airport Already Seeing Positive Change
Orange County took over as the Fixed Based Operator (FBO) of the county airport on July 1. The airfield had diminished use by local pilots during the time it was run by a commercial FBO. Activities at the airport have been on the increase since the county began operating the airport itself. The airport is in Precinct Three County Commissioner John Gothia part of the county. Since birth, Chazaron Judge (left) literally hit the floor running. He’s been running competitively since the ripe young age of four years old. Helm Sisters Compete At Junior Olympics
Madison Helm and younger sister Katelynn competed in the Junior Olympics Track Meet in DesMoines, Iowa. Madison finished seventh in the 3000. Her finish qualified her as a Junior All-American. She also finished 10th out of 48 in the 1500 meter run. Katelynn placed 31st in the 1500 out of 65 and 64th in her 400 with 117 athletes competing. Restaurant Reports
Two restaurants and a convenience store selling food scored below 80 in July. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 35 food businesses during the month and only two had perfect scores. The Star Stop convenience store on Highway 12 in Mauriceville had a 68, the lowest score in the past months. Two Pinehurst seafood restaurants had the next lowest scores. Kotoyoma had a 76 and JJ Wings and Seafood had a 72. The perfect scores went to Caryn's Bakery on West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City, and Panthers Den Preschool in Mauriceville. OCARC Tournament Results
The 31st Annual OCARC Fishing Tournament was held Saturday and several fishermen brought home more than one check. Rickey Adams placed in four categories while Matt Pruyne and Lela Hyatt placed in three. Each year the tournament features a new logo. This years logo, produced by Tom Windham, features Stan Armstrong, who passed away earlier this year and was a longtime volunteer of the tournament.
