Members of the Orange City Council want to clean up the town and are willing to spend more money to do it. District 1 Councilor Pat Pullen during a budget workshop on Tuesday asked about adding another law enforcement officer to work in code enforcement with John D. Taylor. Georgia "GK" Sampson, 96, died on July 27, 2018 in her home in Houston, TX. Georgia Kathryn Smith was born to Pauline Butts Smith and Paul M. Smith on June 10, 1922 in El Reno, OK. Raised by her mother, Pauline, and maternal grandparents, Leroy "Dad" and Leona Butts, she graduated from El Reno High School in 1938 and Ward-Belmont (Junior) College, Nashville, TN in 1940. Viator Competes In Crossfit Games
We've had some great athletes come from Orange County and do some amazing things in different sports. Add Casey Viator's name to that list who may be the fittest of them all. Viator, 23, is a Little Cypress-Mauriceville graduate who went to Texas Lutheran University down in Seguin to play football. While going to school he found a gym to work out in and met a guy that was involved in crossfit. He had done some crossfit work in Bridge City before and liked it. No Rise In Water and Sewer Rates
As the Orange City Council mulls over a proposed new budget and tax rate, residents can be assured of one thing. They won't have to pay more for water and sewer service this year. For the third straight year, the city staff is not recommending a rate increase for those services under what is called the "enterprise fund." On Tuesday, City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre explained the enterprise fund is a separate budget for water and sewer departments. Cox Plays In US Amateur
North Texas golfer Lauren Cox accomplished one of her goals this week by qualifying and playing in the USGA Women's Amateur Golf Tournament. The tournament was played at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn. The Tom Fazio course sits on 317 acres with zoysia fairways, bermuda roughs, and A1 bent grass greens, the 7,184-yard, par-71 course sprawls over nearly twice the acreage of a traditional 18-hole course. Romero’s Time To Shine
Three decades ago, Tina Romero got a part-time job at Staudt's Jewelry on 16th Street in Orange as she went to college. It was her first job after high school and she didn't expect it to turn into a career. Last week she became the owner of Mathews Jewelers Orange as she bought the store from founder Stan Mathews, who has retired. She was a natural for new position. She worked for Mathews for 32 years. Stan Mathews also owned a store in Beaumont. Romero said she was given the offer to buy that store, too, but she wants to concentrate on Orange. BC Approves Proposed Tax Rate
The City Council gave approval Tuesday for the proposed tax rate next year in Bridge City. The proposed ad valorem tax rate will represent about a two and a half cent increase from this year’s tax rate. The proposed tax rate will be $0.547 per 100 dollars value. The budget and the tax rate for next year in Bridge City will be reviewed in public hearings later this month and in September. The City Council approved the dates of August 21 and September 4 for hearings on the proposed tax rate. A public hearing on the 2018-2019 budget will also be held on August 21.
