Sixteen Cross Country teams (Public, Private, and Homeschool) from Southeast Texas participated in the Rick Miller Relays, sponsored by Bridge City CC. The races were held at Claiborne West Park. August Edwards 84 of Orange, Texas passed away August 21, 2018 in Houston, Texas after a short illness. He was a native of White Castle, Louisiana and a resident of Orange, Texas for over 60 years. August was a faithful member of St. Paul CME church where he served on the Usher Board and Brotherhood along with other capacities of the church. Orange Votes On Tax Rate
The Orange City Council Friday afternoon agreed to a tax rate of 80.687 cents per $100 valuation, which is less than the 83 cents per $100 valuation previously announced. The proposed rate is a fraction of a penny more than the effective rate, which would be needed to raise the same amount of tax revenues as last year. The council decided on the tax rate after agreeing not to spend money from reserves, or savings. The proposed 2018-19 budget includes adding another $2.5 million to reserves. County Gets Update With Way Services
County Commissioner Barry Burton met with representatives from Way Services twice this week. Way Services has worked on multiple energy efficiency projects to buildings owned by Orange County. Burton said the first meeting was with the maintenance coordinator of Way to discuss how close to completion are the projects. The two parties agreed that the project was completed July 1 except for a few punch hole items. Way asked for some extra time to finish those and the county approved. St. Mary Holds 50th Reunion
As school was preparing to start, the 1968 St. Mary’s High School Class of 1968 held its 50th Class Reunion. Activities began with a tour of St. Mary Catholic School, 2600 Bob Hall Road in Orange. Members of the 2018-2019 Student Council greeted the graduates that attended and hosted a reception in their honor. Later the graduates gathered at St. Mary Catholic Church to celebrate Mass together.
