The City of West Orange cancelled its general election, but there will still be a special election in May for citizens of West Orange. The City Council declared Monday since there were no contested races the candidates would be elected by acclamation. Shirley Bonnin, Dale Dardeau, and Mike Shugart will retain their seats on the West Orange City Council. There will be several charter amendments on the ballot for the May 5 special election which the citizens will consider for approval.
The council received the annual city audit for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2017 during its meeting Monday. Curtis Craig prepared the audit for the second year in a row. Mayor Roy McDonald was very pleased with the auditor’s report. The city has no debt and had a little growth in revenues. The mayor thanked department heads and the city staff for their efforts in running the city. “They do an excellent job on their record keeping and the heads of the other departments do an excellent job paying attention to the equipment and their expenditures in their departments to stay within the budget,” McDonald praised.
A resolution was approved by the City Council amending the 2017-2018 budget. Public Works Director Mike Stelly said the city is needing to purchase a garbage truck. The budget amendment will raise the price for the purchase of the truck from $70,000 to $73,000.
In other business the council approved a waiver to allow the Mosquito Control District to conduct low altitude flights over West Orange to spray for mosquitoes. This is an annual step done by the Mosquito Control District with the county and each of the municipalities.
