Heartbreaker. It’s the best way to describe the Bridge City Cardinals 48-47 loss to Jasper Friday.
BC was leading or tied every minute of the game until the Bulldogs scored with 23 seconds left and converted the PAT to give them the one point lead.
But even with 17 seconds left after the kickoff, BC still had a shot to win. BC QB Camden Dubois threw a long pass to Zach Honeycutt who ran out of bounds with 9 seconds left to stop the clock. One more pass got them to the 24 and with 4 seconds left and the decision had to be made of whether to attempt a 41 yd FG or go for the score. Dubois went back to pass and was sacked from the blindside to end the game.
BC had a one to two touchdown lead throughout the game. But late in the fourth quarter the Cards fumbled on consecutive drives and the Bulldogs turned both of them into scores to tie the game at 41-41. The Cards regrouped and took a 47-41 lead on a tough 15 yard run by Derrick Dearing, but the PAT was blocked.
The two 10-4A D2 squads combined for 1145 yds of offense (BC 560) and had more than 30 plays of 10 yards or more. Jasper was lead by their do everything QB Tiger Williams who rushed for 200 yds. and 5 scores while throwing for 309 yds. on 14-23 passing. Tyler Ruiz was the top receiver with 8 catches for 135 yds.
For BC it was the duo of Dearing and Cayce Draper. Dearing scored three times to go along with 174 yds rushing and Draper rushed for 189 and 2 scores.
BC will host LCM on Friday.
