Thursday night the 7th Grade Orangefield Bobcat football team squared off against their foes from the North, the Mauriceville Panthers. The Cats got off to a great start, with Matthew Engle running rock steady through the Panthers after the opening kickoff. He was aided by the strong blocking of power backs, Gunner Jones and Jase Gipson. After a long drive, Tyler Washington barreled his way into the end zone on a QB Sneak and the Bobcats had the lead, 6-0. Mauriceville took their first possession and punched in a score after a long drive that saw them convert several late downs to keep the Bobcat defense on the field. Orangefield came up huge on the conversion attempt and kept the score knotted at 6-6 closing out the first half.
The second half saw more of the same as both teams put up another score after stringing together some really long drives. One of which was setup by Christian Frillou after he showed some fancy footwork to the tune of a long kickoff return that left his team in good field position. When asked about his defense, Coach Bates had high praise for DE, Logan Gipson, LB, Clayton Westbrook, and FS, Tyler Washington whose strong play on the three tiers of the Bobcat defense helped to yield only 14 points on the night.
Ultimately that was two too many and Orangefield failed to score on their final possession after falling behind 14-12 on a sweep play the Panthers ran for their final PAT attempt. The Cats travel to Hamshire-Fannett to take on the Shorthorns next Thursday to wrap up their season.
In the second game of Thursday night’s doubleheader, the 8th Grade Orangefield Bobcat football team matched up against their visiting district rivals, the Mauriceville Panthers. Orangefield piled up first down after first down versus the Panthers in the first half moving the ball on the ground at will behind the some great blocking from Max Santos and Colby Gonzales. The entire starting backfield of Clayson Choate, Kadeon Evans, Kent Michael, and Cooper Lowe all found their way into the end zone while Kade Grozier and Kayson DuBois also found pay dirt on two successful conversion tries.
Defensively, the Cats played lights out all night long on their way to an impressive 34-0 shut out of Mauriceville. Leading the way was defensive standout, Jacob Harvey who twice picked Panther passes to give Orangefield the ball in plus territory. When asked about the play of his starting Rover Coach Fowler remarked, “Harvey was all over the place tonight. He made some great tackles to go along with the obvious plays he made on the ball in the pass game.” Other defensive players to note were LB, Jacob Guillot, CB, Jag Gray, and DT, Brant Hyatt who had one of two fumble recoveries for the Cats.
With the win Orangefield improved to 2-2 in district 9-4A play and are headed into a long awaited rematch on the road with the Hamshire-Fannett Shorthorns to wrap up their season.
