St. Joseph’s Altar Is Sunday

St. Mary Catholic Church will host the annual St. Joseph’s Altar on Sunday, March 19, in the Parish Hall. The St. Joseph Chaplet will be recited at 10:30 a.m. and the Blessing of the Altar will be at 11 a.m., before the luncheon is served.

St. Joseph is the patron of the Universal Church. The tradition of the altar dates back hundreds of years ago to Sicily. After praying to St. Joseph from relief from a famine, the Sicilians were relieved from hunger. They began a thanksgiving feast featuring a display of foods to feed those in need, workers, travelers, the persecuted, the poor, the aged and they dying.

Sicilian families have continued the tradition. The luncheon will include pasta Milanese, baked fish, fried and baked vegetables, stuffed artichokes and specialty Italian cookies and desserts. Members of St. Mary Church are invited along with members of the community. The feast is dine-in only and a love offering will be accepted with proceeds being distributed to local charities.

Donations are needed to provide fruit and other food items, or for flowers on the altar. Volunteers are also invited to help. For more information, contact Rosalie or Pat Clark at 886-2577.
