The Orange Bowl stays with the West Orange-Stark Mustangs after last week’s victory, but now the Mustangs must face another old rival this week in the Port Neches-Groves Indians. Coach Cornel Thompson points out the Mustangs were burned for two long touchdowns in the Orange Bowl, and they cannot afford any slip ups against the Indians in The Reservation Friday.
The Indians use a big play offense featuring an outstanding quarterback in Adam Morse who has a tribe of great receivers to throw the pigskin to including Keynel McZeal , Jack Giblin, and Caisen Sullivan. Thompson recognizes PN-G Coach Brandon Faircloth as a great offensive mind.
The Indians also play hard on the defensive side of the ball, and Thompson speaks from experience when he says you can plan on playing for 48 minutes when you go to The Reservation. Port Neches-Groves has revised its defensive look, but not its intensity on defense according to Thompson. The Indians now have a four-man front instead of the 50 look used in previous seasons. In the middle of their 4-3 defense the Indians have Trey Rembert at linebacker who is a four-year starter. Christian Langston is a standout in the defensive line, while Nathan Vidrine helps make the Indians secondary strong. Coach Thompson reminds that PN-G returns six starters on defense, they play hard, they execute their assignments, and they’re well coached.
Both the Mustangs and the Indians come into the game with a win in Week One, Coach Thompson gives the keys for West Orange-Stark to make it two in a row. Thompson sees the two teams’ offenses as being similar with big play capabilities, but the Mustangs must be able to run the football better than they did against Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the first game. Defensively, Thompson wants to eliminate the big plays from the Indians. Finally, the coach reminds that there are three phases to the football game, and the kicking game is very poor right now for West Orange-Stark. Thompson believes the Mustangs have got to win two of the three phases of the contest, so he is looking for their kicking game to improve and it must improve for them to win the football game.
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs go to The Reservation to play the Port Neches-Groves Indians on Friday night.
