WOS 7 21 7 14- 49
SILS 8 14 6 0- 28
It was the battle of unbeatens Friday night in Silsbee’s Tiger Stadium. Two Spread Offenses going against two mirror 50 Defenses. When it was over, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs were the last ones standing without a loss as they defeated the Silsbee Tigers 49-28 in a thrilling non-district game between the two schools.
West Orange-Stark (4-0) used a balanced offense rushing the ball for 324 yards and throwing it for 181 yards while netting 27 first downs. Silsbee (3-1) relied on the quick feet and strong arm of their quarterback Dontre Thomas who accounted for 271 of the Tigers’ 311 yards of total offense.
The Mustangs marched down the field on the first possession of the contest going 71 yards in nine plays. The drive was balanced with five running plays and four passes. Jack Dallas was of four of four for 53 yards including a 13-yard touchdown to Thomas Wallace. Dallas added the point after for a 7-0 lead with 7:35 to play in the first quarter.
It took Silsbee just over two minutes to take the lead. Dontre Thomas cut loose for a 28-yard gain before throwing a beautiful 27-yard pass to Kolten Mackey for the touchdown. Thomas then added the two-point conversion to give Silsbee an 8-7 advantage with 5:29 still left in the initial quarter.
The fireworks were just starting as the two offenses combined to score 35 points in the second quarter. West Orange-Stark scored twice on impressive drives of 68 and 76 yards. Jeremiah Shaw capped the first eleven-play drive with a 3-yard run after which the kick by Dallas hit the left upright. Dallas scrambled brilliantly 24 yards for the touchdown on the second scoring drive and his kick made the score 20-8 in favor of the Mustangs with 4:33 to go in the half.
Thomas put the Tigers back on top with two lightning quick scores. First the Silsbee quarterback broke loose for a 72-yard run on a read option to setup a one-yard plunge by himself. Mackey barely crossed the goal line on a run for the two-point conversion.
West Orange-Stark fumbled the ball on the first play after the kickoff and Jabari Gooch recovered for the Tigers. One play later, Thomas sprinted down the left sideline for a 24-yard touchdown. The try for two failed because of a fumble on the exchange and Silsbee had the lead 22-20 with just 1:36 before half.
Using the two-minute drill to perfection the Mustangs drove 67 yards to regain the lead with less than 31 seconds left in the half. Dallas completed four passes on the drive for 54 yards and scrambled again for a 20-yard gain. He threw a brilliant pass into the front left corner of the end zone caught by Wallace who out leaped the Tiger defender to make the catch for the touchdown. Malick Phillips ran the Wildcat Offense on the conversion successfully after Silsbee was flagged for offside on the first unsuccessful attempt by the Mustangs. The teams went to the locker room with West Orange-Stark leading 28-22.
The second half saw Thomas pick up where he left off at the end of the second quarter. He and Mackey teamed up again for a 46-yard completion to give the Tigers a first and goal at the six. Two plays later Thomas scored from the three. His run for two failed and the score was tied for the first time since the game started.
A turnover turned the game in favor of the Mustangs when Jarron Morris intercepted a Thomas pass at the 46. WO-S had its quickest drive of the night only four plays to take the lead for good 35-28. Melech Edwards popped loose for a 27-yard run and the score. Edwards carried the ball 19 times for 116 yards, and Jeremiah Shaw also went over the century mark with 124 yards on 14 carries.
Two fourth quarter touchdowns by the Mustangs closed the scoring. Dallas threw his third touchdown pass of the night a 5-yarder to Rufus Joseph. Tokeba Hughey ran 15 yards for the touchdown with 1:46 to go in the game to make the final score 49-28. Dallas finished the night completing 17 of 23 for 181 yards and no interceptions.
