The West Orange-Stark Mustangs saw a couple of firsts Friday night but the bottom line is that they are 6-0 after a 45-21 win over Kennedale in Nacogdoches.
For the first time the Mustangs went through the first quarter without a score. But they found their way in the second quarter with 24 points as they lead at the half 24-0 with the defense recording its 22nd straight quarter without giving up a point.
WOS jumped on the Wildcats in the third quarter, with RB Jeremiah Shaw scoring two TD’s on their first two possessions to increase their lead to 38-0. Then, it happened.
Kennedale’s Jaden Knowles broke through the middle and ran 51 yards before Malick Phillips caught him from behind to keep him from scoring. But the Wildcats would not be denied as Knowles scored from the 5 to end the scoreless streak, 38-7.
But the Wildcats weren’t through, After the Mustangs BB Tezeno scored from 9 to make the score 45-7, Kennedale scored on a 90 yd dive and a 48 yd. run to cut the lead to 45-21 and that’s as close as they would get.
Despite the win and the 6-0 start, Coach Cornel Thompson said in a postgame interview with KOGT that he was having a hard time enjoying the win. “I knew the streak wouldn’t last and Kennedale was a good team, but I’m disappointed because we have a few selfish players and that costs us some points at the end.”
WOS rolled up 30 first downs and 485 yds. of offense while the Wildcats responded with 323. The Mustangs defense came in to the game only allowing 75 ypg. Knowles finished with 193 yds rushing and two scores.
Shaw led WOS with three scores and 113 yards rushing. QB Jack Dallas was 14-26 for 222 yds. and two touchdowns. He also ran for another. Receiver Keion Hancock did not play because of a bad ankle. Ronald Carter took advantage of the playing time on offense with three catches for 63 yds. and a score.
