The Vidor Pirates stormed to an early lead and never looked back as the team rolled to its fifth consecutive victory.
The Pirates defeated the Lumberton Raiders, 45-22, on Friday night at Pirate Stadium in Vidor with an explosive first-half before coasting to another victory against a tough District 22-5A opponent.
Vidor received the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a score on its first drive of the game, as Kolbie Humble powered into the end zone from the 5-yard line for a quick 6-0 following the missed extra point attempt with 9:11 remaining in the opening period. The drive was highlighted by a 42-yard jaunt down the sideline by Vidor quarterback Maverick Quirante.
Lumberton’s first drive ended rather abruptly as Vidor defender William Fawcett picked off quarterback Brett Marcentel’s first pass of the night.
The Pirates only needed one play to capitalize on the turnover as quarterback Maverick Quirante rolled to his left and hit Haylon Leckelt down the sideline for a 30-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead following the two-point run by Kolbie Humble.
Following a three-and-out series by the Raiders, Vidor only needed three plays to find the end zone on this drive. Facing a third down and long, Quirante rolled left on the same play that found success on the previous drive, and, again, hit Leckelt in stride down the left sideline as he streaked 62 yards for another Pirates touchdown and a 21-0 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter.
Lumbeton’s offense was plagued by turnovers throughout the night, including its following drive which was ended by a fumble. Although Vidor could not punch the ball into the end zone, Bridger Quirante put a 33-yard field goal right down the middle of the uprights and a 24-0 Pirates lead.
Lumberton had its best drive of the half on its next possession as it switched to a Wildcat-style offense with running back Keaton Upshaw taking the snaps deep and finding holes in the Pirates defense. It looked as the Raiders may finally find the end zone before a fumble deep in Pirates territory stymied another drive.
The Pirates usually chew up the clock with its ground-control offense, but Friday’s game against Lumberton was a series of big plays. Following the fumble recovery, on the second offensive play of the series, Quirante scorched the Lumberton the defense for a 73-yard run.
The Raiders responded on its next drive with a quick march downfield as Marcentel broke through the left side of the line and sprinted 26 yards for the touchdown to narrow the Pirates lead to 31-7 with 4:10 remaining in the opening half.
Lumberton forced Vidor to punt on its next series and was again marching down the field on a mixture of runs by Marcentel and Upshaw, along with the occassional pass. As the clock was winding down, Marcentel looked across the middle and unleashed a pass only to be picked off by Pirates defender Brock Vincent who raced 77 yards untouched on the interception and 38-7 halftime lead.
Vidor backed off early in the third quarter and it showed as the Raiders responded with a 64-yard march downfield to open the second-half as Upshaw scored on a 3-yard run. Following a Vidor punt, Lumberton added another touchdown as Marcentel hit receiver Remington Boykin on a 67-yard scoring strike and cut the Pirates lead to 38-22 after the two-point conversion.
The Pirates put the game away midway through the fourth quarter on the first play following Marcentel’s third interception of the night as Vidor running back Dustin Burke blasted through the defense on a 29 yard touchdown run.
Vidor (5-1, 4-0) will travel to The Reservation next Friday to face the Port Neches-Groves Indians (5-0, 3-0) in a pivotal District 22-5A contest. PN-G defeated Baytown Lee, 48-16, on Friday night. Lumberton (2-3, 1-3) will return home to host the Port Arthur Memorial Titans.
