In softball strong pitching dominates good hitting. Tuesday evening in a game with first place in the district on the line the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears got a dominating game from pitcher Briana Frenzel to edge the Silsbee Lady Tigers 1-0 at Lady Bear Field.
Frenzel, just a sophomore for the Lady Bears, pitched a one-hit shutout, with one walk, and striking out 10 Lady Tigers. She walked Silsbee’s leadoff batter in the first and gave up a double to Tristyn Terry to start the second. No other Lady Tigers would reach base as Frenzel retired the last 18 batters she faced.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville (4-1) is guaranteed at least a tie for first place half way through the district. Bridge City which handed the Lady Bears their only district loss played Tuesday at Hamshire-Fannett. A Lady Cardinals win would make them 4-1 in the district race. With Tuesday’s loss Silsbee drops to 3-2.
The Lady Bears did not pound Silsbee’s Braylee Forse, but after Forse struck out two and put LC-M down in order in the first the Lady Bears threatened to score in every inning. It took the only error committed by either team to get the lone run of the game for Little Cypress-Mauriceville.
Although the error brought home the run, aggressive heads up baserunning by the Lady Bears forced the errant throw. In the bottom of the fifth Jone’e Villanueva drew the second walk issued by Forse to start the inning. JoAnna Henry almost made the score two to nothing when she hit a long fly ball to the left field fence which was pulled in for the first out.
Madison Murdock up next cued a pitch off the end of her bat towards first base. Forse gloved the ball on the run and tossed underhanded with her glove to Baylee Griffin covering first for the second out. Villanueva advanced to second base on the play and noticed the Lady Tigers’ had no one guarding third. She took off for third which pressured Griffin to throw there still not realizing no one was covering third base for Silsbee. The throw went off the Lady Bears’ dugout and into foul territory. Villanueva raced home to give LC-M a precious 1-0 advantage.
In the sixth the Lady Bears had a chance to put the game out of reach, but credit Silsbee with some outstanding defense in that inning. Ashley Short singled to left field and went to second on a wild pitch. Olivia Leavings had a superb at bat fouling off at least nine pitches before earning a walk on a 3-2 pitch.
Forse really seemed drained at that point, but managed to strike out Renna Toomey for the first out. Jenna James hit a looping fly ball down the right field line that appeared for certain would drop in for a hit and possibly a run batted in. The Lady Tigers’ right fielder Bree Bass made a sensational catch tumbling as she did so. Bass then threw to first base to complete an inning ending double play and keep the score 1-0 heading to the seventh inning.
Frenzel made short work of Silsbee in the seventh getting a pop to the catcher on the first pitch, a fly to Villanueva in left for the second out, before grabbing another pop up herself for the final out and the win. The grin on Frenzel’s face after the catch was considerably wider than the one-run margin of victory for her and the Lady Bears.
Friday the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears open the second half of district at home against the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns. Bridge City will play Friday at home against the Orangefield Lady Bobcats. Silsbee plays the Lady Mustangs on Friday at West Orange-Stark.
