Thursday the 7th grade Orangefield Bobcat football team took on the Panthers of Liberty, Texas. The Bobcats looked to be off to a fast start after Garrison Hughes rushed for a first down on their first play from scrimmage, but the drive stalled four plays later after a failed attempt at a fake punt. Liberty soon rushed their way down the field in a hand full of plays to make the score 8-0 after their opening drive.
But that is when the Bobcats clawed their way back. Behind the strong running of Matthew Engle and some great blocking from the rest of the offense. Orangefield even mixed in a couple of passes, one of which was a completion to Ryan Trahan. After the Bobcats melted away the majority of the second quarter, they were faced with a fourth and goal from the half yard line. Coach Bradley called timeout to line up his offense and Tyler Washington plunged his way into the end zone behind the strong surge of his offensive line. The Cats failed to convert on their two point play and the score was 6-8 going into the half.
The defense played great all evening long and shut out Liberty the entire second half behind the tenacious play of Clayton Westbrook, Aaron Miller, and Logan Gipson. Orangefield found themselves with the ball late and put together a big drive in the 4th quarter, rushing their way deep into Panther territory. The Cats however came up a little short on a 4th down conversion and turned the ball over with just shy of two minutes left in the game. Although the final score remained 6-8, the Bobcats played their best game of the year and their coaches were very pleased with their grit and determination. Orangefield will host the Mauriceville Panthers next Thursday at 5:00 pm.
The 8th Grade Orangefield Bobcats came into last night’s contest versus the Liberty Panthers on a four game skid, but quickly erased any chances of extending that streak. The Cats punished the Panthers on both sides of the football in a game that never saw the Bobcats punt or give up a point. The offense scored on the first two drives of the game and went into the half up 14-0. The biggest play of the second half was a fumble return for a touchdown that saw Free Safety, Clayson Choate score from about 60 yards out. Wide Receiver, Tyler Greenwood caught a pass from RB, Heston Puckett to add two points after Kade Grozier scored the Cats final touchdown of the game. Some other players to note are LB, Michael Franklin and OL, Gabriel Statum. Coach Reed added that the two athletes have stepped up to provide depth on both sides of the ball for the Bobcats. Orangefield won 28-0 and will face the Mauriceville Panthers next Thursday night at F.L. McLain Stadium for their final home game of the season.
