The Orangefield Bobcats used a smothering defense in the third quarter to take the lead and defeated the Evadale Rebels 56-47 in their opening game of the Cardinal Classic. The Bobcats trailed 28-27 entering the second half, but held the Rebels scoreless until the final 65 seconds of the third quarter when Evadale got two free throws. Orangefield had a 12-0 run to start the quarter.
The first quarter saw the Bobcats take the lead in the closing seconds as Zach Dischler made a steal and passed to Dylan Williams who made the basket and was fouled. Williams made the free throw to give Orangefield a 17-14 advantage after one period.
Evadale rallied in the second quarter to take a one-point lead which could have been more. The Rebels got a three-point shot to swish home in the closing minute of the second, but a foul was called on a teammate under the basket. After a discussion the referees agreed the foul occurred before the shot was launched.
After the Bobcats rallied to take the lead in the third the two teams played back and forth with no decisive swings by either team. Evadale got as close as six points, but could not narrow the gap any closer.
A great game was played by Orangefield’s Aven Lathrop who had a double-double with 20 points and more than ten rebounds. Williams finished with 12 points for the Bobcats. Evadale’s Jonathan Gravis scored 17 points including five three-pointers, four in the first quarter.
