Turnovers and mistakes last week cost the Orangefield Bobcats dearly as they lost their second straight game. This week Orangefield plays the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears.
Bobcats’ Coach Josh Smalley points out that LC-M has switched to its old offense. The Bears have gone back to the Spread in an effort to get opponents to put fewer defenders in the box. It worked well last week as they put 40 points on the scoreboard. Christopher Winters is their main guy as he does a good job running the ball.
Smalley observes that LC-M quarterback Beau Bickham throws the football pretty well and has some good receivers to get the ball to. The Bears are also big up front in the offensive line. The coach admits the Bobcats have their work cut out for them stopping the Bears’ running attack and still being prepared for the passes from Bickham.
On defense the Bears line up in a 4-3, but Smalley anticipates seeing some change from LC-M because of the Slot-T offense that Orangefield employs. Hardin-Jefferson runs the Slot-T also, and last week the Bears stacked nine men in the box against them.
J’Lon Douglas is a great player for Little Cypress-Mauriceville at middle linebacker. Another good defender is Kayne Williams at outside linebacker. The Bears have a huge defensive tackle in Jeremiah Armstrong who causes havoc. The LC-M secondary is athletic led by Ronald Guillory. Smalley states the Bobcats no doubt will be challenged moving the ball against the Bears’ defense.
Cutting down on turnovers may be a cliché for football coaches, however, that is the number one key for Orangefield this week according to Coach Smalley. Holding on to the football is the top priority after losing four fumbles last week. Defensively the Bobcats need to tackle well and use a week of practice to be prepared for its first look at the Spread this season. Smalley says, “Hopefully, we can make the trip over to Orange and play well to come out on top.”
Orangefield plays at Little Cypress-Mauriceville Friday night. The Bobcats and the Bears are the KOGT game of the week with the kickoff at 7:00 PM and a replay of the broadcast can be heard Saturday at 7:00 AM.
