The West Orange-Stark Mustangs scored the first nine times they had the ball Friday night. The Mustangs won convincingly 57-7 over Hamshire-Fannett at Longhorn Stadium in Hamshire in the opening game of district action.
West Orange-Stark (5-0, 1-0) extended its state high winning streak to 32 games. Hamshire-Fannett (2-4, 0-1) fell behind early and never really challenged the state-ranked Mustangs.
Field position greatly favored West Orange-Stark which started seven of its first eight drives in Longhorn territory. All resulted in scores.
Kavyn Cooper scored the first two touchdowns on runs of six and four yards. Chad Dallas made both point afters, and the Mustangs led 14-0 with 1:30 to play in the first quarter.
Quarterback Chaka Watson was nearly perfect throwing the football. He only played in the first half and was 9 of 10 for 98 yards with two touchdowns, one to Jarron Morris and the other to Kaleb Ramsey.
Coming off the bench Renaldo Rose lit things up with a burst up the middle for 43 yards and a touchdown. The kick made it 28-0 with 5:21 before half.
Mustangs’ specialty teams got a first half score when Deiond’re Hawthorne zigged and zagged 64 yards with a punt return. The return prompted the Longhorns to kick out-of-bounds for the remainder of the game.
With the score 41-0 and less than a minute to play in the first half Hamshire-Fannett got on the board. Star running back Tyrese White cut up the middle and then outraced the Mustangs to the end zone for a 70-yard touchdown. The two teams went to half time with the score 41-7.
Picking up where they left off the Mustangs scored the first three possessions of the third quarter. After a drive stalled at the Hamshire-Fannett 16, Dallas booted a 33-yard field goal.
Justin Sibley broke a long run for a 34-yard score. Backup quarterback Tyrone Wilson played the entire second half and got the final touchdown himself on a one-yard quarterback sneak late in the third quarter. A running clock was used in the fourth quarter which was scoreless.
The Mustangs used their ground game to a large extent. Eight different Mustangs carried the ball for 219 yards. The leaders were Cooper with 59 and Sibley with 56 yards.
The second week of district will find the West Orange-Stark Mustangs at home against the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks. Hamshire-Fannett plays at Liberty.
