Their pride was hurt for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs last week with the loss to Richmond Foster, but fortunately there were no serious injuries. The Mustangs will be without the services of Keion Hancock for another three weeks with a hairline fracture of the collarbone injured in the Silsbee game.
Coach Cornel Thompson is preparing West Orange-Stark for Friday’s game with the Newton Eagles in the KOGT Game of the Week. Thompson points to Gabe Foster as the elite Eagle on both offense and defense. Brock Barbay has moved from Coldspring with his dad who is now coaching for Newton. Brock is the Newton quarterback. Thompson says the Eagles play a number of people on both sides of the ball. They are talented on offense and very tough on defense so the Mustangs will need to play pretty good against these people.
The 7-Diamond Defense is a somewhat unique formation used by Newton. Coach Thompson gives the formula for what the Mustangs must do to have success against it, and it is blocking. Thompson believes the offensive line needs to get on their blocks and stay on them through the whole play. The coach admits West Orange-Stark last week was outplayed by the more athletic Foster defense, and that could be the case again this week against Newton. Thompson states the Mustangs must sustain their blocks to make a better showing and accountability of themselves during the course of this contest.
The Newton Eagles are on a three-game losing streak which the Mustangs would like to extend to four games as well as avenging a loss last season to the Eagles. Thompson says this is a very important game for West Orange-Stark with district games starting next week. Thompson reminds that the Mustangs had a similar scenario last season when they lost to Richmond Foster and then went into Newton where they were outplayed while suffering their second straight loss. Coach Thompson does not want to enter district with two straight losses under his belt again this year. Thompson indicates the Mustangs need to get themselves ready mentally for the football game which will have some outside distractions as the game of the week and a Pink Out Game. West Orange-Stark will need to execute its offense, to tackle better than it did last week, and the kicking game still needs players to perform kicking the ball, covering kicks, and on returning kicks according to Thompson.
Because both teams reached the State Finals last year, FSSW is featuring this game as their DQ Game of the Week which means they’ll feature the teams in a five minute segment that will run during their scoreboard at midnight Friday and on Sunday at 10:30pm.
