The Mustangs won the battle of FM 105 defeating the Orangefield Bobcats last week. Now West Orange-Stark must go on the road to face the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns.
Coach Cornel Thompson emphatically states the Longhorn the Mustangs must lasso is Kendrick King. Thompson points out West Orange-Stark must keep track of the whereabouts of King since although he is the Longhorns’ quarterback, Hamshire-Fannett will line him up in two or three different positions getting King the ball as a running back or throwing the ball to him as a wide receiver. The key Thompson says is limiting the big plays King has, you will not stop him, but you must limit the number of plays King breaks loose because he’s a phenomenal athlete.
West Orange-Stark has a pretty good quarterback of its own in Jack Dallas. Thompson says protecting him will be important for the Mustangs against an experienced Hamshire-Fannett defense. Thompson reminds that the Longhorns have at least four defensive starters who have been starting on the varsity for four years. Hamshire-Fannett also has 24 seniors on the varsity. They play tough, so Thompson wants to establish his running game as normal to protect Dallas and help open up the West Orange-Stark passing game. If they can establish the run, the coach believes the Mustangs’ play action passes will be more effective.
Staying undefeated in district is the goal for the Mustangs. To do that West Orange-Stark must win two-thirds of the offensive, defensive, and kicking phases of the game according to Coach Thompson. The kicking game is still a sore spot for Thompson. Kick coverage has been weak, and the Mustangs even resorted to going for two-points three times instead of kicking the point-after in the Orangefield game. That means winning the other two phases are imperative for the Mustangs; of course the Longhorns will want to do the same thing and will have something to do with West Orange-Stark taking both the offensive and defensive phases on Friday night.
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs try to keep on rolling on the road against the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns.
