The West Orange-Stark Mustangs made another good run last season winning the district championship and advancing to the quarterfinals. Coach Cornel Thompson has some solid players back from that team that he can build another contender for state this year. In the offensive line three-year starters Paul Hebert is at right tackle, Josh Orebo will be at center, and Octavious Crosson will see time in the offensive line. Thompson expects tremendous contributions from Will Johnson at wide receiver, and Chase Rutledge is back for his senior year as the Mustangs’ starting quarterback. These should all contribute to the West Orange-Stark offensive football team. Mixed in with the returning lettermen, Coach Thompson has a couple of young men battling for starting positions. Two seniors with no varsity experience have impressed coaches in workouts and one scrimmage.
Troy Brinson has been noticeable at cornerback and as a tight end. Jeron Preston has made contributions and is a pleasant surprise so far. The experience in the offensive line should be a positive factor according to Thompson for the Mustangs’ offense. Thompson sees the offensive line as a key to West Orange-Stark’s success this season. Virgil Vontoure joins the other three lettermen with experience in the line along with Scott McCarty to give the Mustangs a solid front line. Thompson states WOS will go as far as the offensive can go. Finding players that can start on the Mustang defense, especially at linebacker, will be Coach Thompson’s main goal in the final scrimmage before the start of the season. Four of five players are working to get a starting slot at linebacker in the Mustangs’ defense. Thompson notes they are young and need to catch up to the speed of the game at the varsity level. Speed defines Deionte Thompson the three-year starter in the secondary who will be a leader on defense joining returning starter Octavious Crosson in the defensive line. Thompson predicts some people will need to grow up fast for the Mustangs to play the kind of defense they are accustomed to playing at West Orange Stark. The Mustangs play the LCM Bears in the Orange Bowl on August 29, and on KOGT.
