It is only one game, but the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears served notice last Friday they could be a team to watch in the race for the district championship after a 58-38 win over the Silsbee Tigers. Bear center Dalton LeDoux was injured and will be observed early this week to determine if he will be available for this Friday’s game.
Coach Randy Crouch is concentrating on getting the Bears ready for the Bridge City Cardinals and their Slot T offense. Crouch credits Bridge City Coach Dwayne DuBois with doing a great job making the Cardinals the defending district champions. Crouch believes DuBois is why the Cardinals run the Slot T so extremely well.
Coach DuBois’s son Caleb is the quarterback and does a good job directing the Cardinals’ offense. Max Baker is the top rusher for Bridge City, but Andy Lara is coming back from an injury and will also be a concern for the Bears. Although young the Cardinals have a good group of linemen. Crouch pronounced, “It’ll be a huge challenge for us.”
It will be difficult for the Bears to replicate their 58 points this week against the tough Cardinals’ defense according to Crouch. Bridge City lines up in a 50 Defense with a 3-4 alignment. The Cardinals do a good of containing ball carriers and limiting big plays.
With the Bridge City Cardinals their best defense to a certain extent is their offense which is geared for ball control and time-consuming drives. As a result, Coach Crouch indicated it is imperative that Little Cypress-Mauriceville make good use of every possession since there will be fewer of them. “You might not get very many opportunities, so when you get them on offense you’ve got to take advantage of them,” Crouch explained.
It is still too early to say this game will decide the district championship, but both teams enter the contest looking to go 2-0 in district. Coach Crouch analyzed the importance of Friday’s matchup between LC-M and Bridge City. Both teams are coming off big wins and will try to keep their momentum rolling as the district unfolds. The coach points out there are only three games left after this Friday and all against quality opponents. “It’s a road game for us, we’ve got to get mentally ready, and focus on the task at hand,” Crouch concluded.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears and the Bridge City Cardinals play Friday night at Larry B. Ward Stadium in Bridge City. The game will be carried live on KOGT beginning with the kickoff at 7:00 PM. There will a replay of the broadcast at 7:00 AM on Saturday.
