The Bridge City Lady Cardinals advanced to the Regionals last season. Coach Jennifer Willis believes making it to the Regionals will help this season’s Lady Cardinals. Willis feels the kids are experienced ball players as half the team is back with postseason experience, they like the pressure and they love to play, she points out adding it was a good experience for those kids. Willis has Alexus Henry, Shayla Bratton, Sarah Acosta, Bailee Bacon, and Kasey Frederick who all played significant roles in last season’s playoff run. Coach Willis tells what those five girls provide for her team. “Leadership for one, those five girls are great leaders, all five of them,” Willis emphasizes. She says Alexus is in a different role this season playing a different position. Shayla has taken a great leadership role on the court running the point guard with Bailee Bacon. Coach Willis thinks the Lady Cardinals are not rebuilding, they’re reloading, stating the Lady Cardinals are competitors and will take the leadership roles and go with them. There are several talented young ladies stepping up to the varsity at Bridge City according to Willis. Tresha Bonton new to the Lady Cardinals varsity is a great defensive player and a good outside shooter at guard. Freshman Kassidy Wilbur will see playing time on the varsity. Juniors that will play according to Willis are Shelby Dishon, Carlie Fults, Kaitlan Thayer, and Madison Trahan. Bridge City played in a strong district last season, and with the addition of the LC-M Lady Bears this season, Coach Willis thinks the district race will be even tighter. Willis predicts that many of the teams last season were young and will be better this season, and with so many teams with good players and strong coaching it’s anybody district.
