The NFL has been celebrating the 50th year of the Super Bowl this year, culminating with the Super Bowl on Feb. 7.
Part of the celebration is that the league has sent commemorative footballs to every high school that has produced a Super Bowl player or head coach.
West Orange-Stark has produced two of those players, in Kevin Smith (Cowboys) and Earl Thomas (Seahawks).
Bridge City should also receive two for Jason Mathews (Titans) the late Shane Dronett (Falcons). Mathews’ son Bryce Mathews just committed to play college ball for Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss.
Schools receiving one ball are Silsbee (Reggie Garrett, Steelers), Jasper (Red Bryant, Seahawks), and Warren (John Elliot, Jets).
In the release, Port Arthur Memorial is listed as having the most gold footballs with 8. But they included players/head coaches from Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, SFA, and Memorial.
They split Beaumont up with West Brook having 5, Charlton-Pollard 3, and French and Central with one each.
A great showing by Southeast Texas!
