OJH vs. West Orange-Stark: December 17, 2015Last night the Orangefield Bobcat 7th Grade B team returned from their one week break to face the West Orange-Stark Stallions in district play. To say that the Bobcats got off to a slow start would be an understatement. Turnovers and poor rebounding against the stingy Stallions forced the Cats into a 16-0 deficit at the half. The Bobcats had a much better showing in the 2nd half; however, limiting the Stallions to 4 points the rest of the way. Orangefield found a few points in the 4th quarter, but it was too late to impact the game. The Bobcats ultimately fell to the Mustangs 20-3, with all 3 points for the Cats being scored by Cade Griffin. This moves their record to 0-4-1 on the year. The 8th Grade B team game was a nail biter that finished 12-9, in favor of the Bobcats. The first points of the game came on a Kade Grozier with a “fade away” jumper from the base line after which Orangefield stayed atop the scoreboard the rest of the night. The high point man was Cooper Lowe with 7 and shooting fifty percent from the free throw line. Defense was key to the Bobcats win and Cade Kile was a big part of that with his 3 steals. Grozier pitched in with 2 steals and 2 blocked shots and Post, Kale Berlinger played big under the basket contributing 3 rebounds and an assist. This win against WO-S advances the B team record to 4-1 on the year.
The 7th Grade Bobcats (1-6) were sure to have a test in tonight’s game vs. the WO-S Stallions. After a productive week of practice, the guys made the necessary adjustments and put together one of their best defensive performances of the year. However, forced shots and few openings offensively resulted in a loss of 38-11. Jase Gipson, Aaron Miller, and Bryce Bergeron all made noteworthy contributions to the Bobcats’ efforts.
In the final game of the night, Orangefield’s 8th Grade team came out determined to show the Stallions just how good they have been playing as of late and from the opening tip they did just that. Early West Orange-Stark had no answer for the Bobcat’s zone defense and slower pace of play. The Cats patience in the 1st quarter yielded a meager 7 points to a team that had only lost one game up to this point in the season. For most of the 2nd period the game stayed close, but Orangefield looked to wear down right before the half allowing the Stallions to open up a 22-11 lead going into the break. The Bobcats took the floor in the 3rd and surged back into the game behind the strong play of Guard, Kent Michael who had 11 of his team leading 16 points in the 2nd half. And while the Cats had cut the WO-S led to just 7 with 2 minutes left in the game, they never could quite close the gap. The final score was 46-34 and Orangefield drops to 2-6 on the year. The Bobcats will play host to their neighbors from the North, the Mauriceville Panthers, after the Christmas break.
