The ball hit the ground more times than both coaches would’ve preferred Friday night as the LCM Bears got their first win of the season with a 35-7 win over Orangefield. The Bobcats were playing their first game of the season following the devastation of Harvey in the area.
The Bears (1-1) distributed the ball evenly as they rolled up almost 400 yards of offense in the victory. LCM had a 28-0 lead at the half. QB Ethan McCollum rushed for 7o yards and 2 scores and completed 7-9 passes for 84 yards.
LCM will host Crosby for homecoming Friday while OF (0-1) will play Kelly.

Newton broke open a close game in the second quarter Friday night at Bridge City’s Larry B. Ward Stadium by scoring multiple touchdowns in both the second and third quarters. The state ranked Eagles defeated the Cardinals 55-14.
Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, Newton (3-0) scored three times in the second period and tallied touchdowns on four straight possessions to start the second half. Bridge City (0-2) lost for the second consecutive week to a state powerhouse.
The Eagles exhibited an offense to the power of three. Their three stars all produced at least three touchdowns. Quarterback Josh Foster scored the first touchdown of the game on an 81-yard run and threw three touchdown passes. Running back Darwin Barlow carried the ball 15 times for 191 yards and three scores.
The brightest star of the game probably was Newton’s Tamauzia Brown. On defense Brown intercepted two Bridge City passes including one in the end zone that stymied the first Cardinals’ drive. Offensively, Brown was dynamic touching the ball 6 times for 177 yards. He scored on three long touchdowns of 35, 50, and 58 yards. Two were on passes from Foster and the other was on a run with just 13 seconds left in the first half.
Bridge City had difficulty getting the grind it out running game which is its trademark totally in gear. After driving to a first down at the Newton 12 the Cardinals got to a third-and-3 at the five. Newton’s defense then stuffed a run for a four-yard loss. On fourth down Caleb DuBois rolled to his left, but his pass in the end zone was picked off by Brown.
After Newton’s third touchdown Caleb Honeycutt returned the ensuing kickoff cutting to his left and sprinting down the Bridge City sidelines. Honeycutt dove and struck the pylon with the football to complete an 89-yard touchdown return. Zeke Mendez playing for injured kicker Alfredo Heraldez made the point-after to cut the lead to 21-7 with 4:26 left in the half.
The other Bridge City touchdown came at the conclusion of a rather quick drive. Max Baker broke loose on the longest play from scrimmage for the Cardinals with a 67-yard run to the Eagles’ 7. Two plays later Steven Nguyen scored untouched from the six. Mendez made the kick again bringing the score to 42-14 with 4:20 to play in the third quarter.
The Cardinals netted 220 yards running the football on 51 carries. Baker was the leading rusher with 83 yards on 12 rushes. Bridge City completed only one of seven passes for 15 yards.
Bridge City will try to rebound next week, but it will not be any easier for the Cardinals as they travel to Jasper to play the Bulldogs. Newton plays at home next Friday night against East Chambers.
