OJH vs. Bridge City: January 22, 2016
The 7th Grade B Team Bobcats took on the Bridge City Cardinals for a shot at redemption as the Cardinals defeated them, 22-2, in their first meeting. The 1st quarter featured strong defense by both teams and ended up 0-0. Then things got going in the 2nd quarter with the Cats scoring first, although the Cardinals would eventually tie things up at 5 going into the break. The 2nd half saw the Cats make some key mistakes on defense that led to Bridge City breaking open a 6 point lead. The Bobcats never could quite recover and ended up falling to BC 13-7. The Orangefield fell to 1-7 with the loss.
In the second game of the night, the 8th Grade B Team also took on the Bridge City Cardinals. Orangefield entered the game 6 and 1 with their lone blemish being a 17-13 defeat at the hands of the Cards in the season opener. The Cats were led in scoring by Jacob Harvey who had one of his best games pouring in 9 points on the night. The team also benefited from Cade Kile and Cooper Lowe adding 4 points of their own. The game was back and forth for much of the first half, but in the end the Cardinals pulled out the win with the final score being 23 to 18. This was a tough loss for the Bobcats ending a win streak of six in a row. The 2nd loss to BC drops their record to 6-2 for the year.
Tonight, the 7th Grade “A” team Bobcats were looking to avenge their season opening loss against the Bridge City Cardinals. During the first quarter, the Cardinals jumped out to early 15-1 lead fueled by turnovers caused by tenacious defense. The Bobcats made positive adjustments in the 2nd quarter and clawed back to 23-15 going into the half. However, the Bridge City ramped up the pressure and points in the 3rd quarter outscoring Orangefield 24-2. The 4th was no different as the Bobcats fell well short of victory and drop to 2-9 after their 60-17 loss. Offensive standouts for the Bobcats were Gunner Jones and Bryce Bergeron.
In the final game of the night, the 8th Grade Bobcats appeared poised to take the “rubber match” against the neighboring Cardinals of Bridge City after what their coach said was a great week of practice. The series was knotted at a game 1-1, as Bridge City previously defeated Orangefield 25-21 to open the season after which the Cats avenged that early loss with a victory over the rival Cards in the consolation game of the PN-G Tournament. Things did not start well for Orangefield as they once again found themselves in a big hole early trailing Bridge City 7-1 after the 1st period. The Bobcats got back on track with more energy and better ball movement in the 2nd and 3rd, but after trading baskets with the Cardinals, found themselves down the same 6 points to enter the 4th. Orangefield out-hustled the Cards and closed the gap to 3, but found themselves down and were forced to put BC on the line late in the game. The Cats found themselves down 23-18 when the final buzzer sounded and this gut-wrenching loss extends their losing streak to 4 games dating back to just before Christmas Break. Orangefield drops to 3-7 on the year and will look to get their first win of 2016 in their home finale vs. Little Cypress next week.
