The Deweyville Pirates had a bye week to recover from a brutal first half of the football season. At least half a dozen Pirate starters are out or are nursing injuries. Coach Lance Dale says the bye week and this week will be used to get ready for the Newton Eagles on Friday.
Coach Dale reminds that Newton was the district champs last year and advanced all the way to the state championship game at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium before losing to the Waskom Wildcats, so it will be a significant opponent to begin district for the Pirates. The Eagles on offense run their traditional stuff with scat traps, double dives, the scat pass, and will get in different formations to spread out the opposing defense. Dale points out it is the same Newton offense they have been running since the seventies and adds why mess with success.
Deweyville hopes to have some success against Newton’s 7-Diamond Defense. Coach Dale is looking to copy what another local team did effectively against the Eagles’ defense. Dale states the Pirates plan of attack is to run right at them and looking at some of the success the Orangefield Bobcats had against Newton two weeks ago the coach hopes to piggy back off that.
Friday night is the opening game of district for both teams and Dale would like to have the Pirates begin district with a strong performance. Dale believes establishing the line of scrimmage and developing a running game for Deweyville is the first key for the Pirates. No big plays for Newton is the second key which means the Pirates need to notice the Eagles unbalanced line and slide over. Most important though according to Dale is for the Pirates to stay healthy and not get anybody else injured. Deweyville is only half way through a ten-game season and it cannot afford any more starters to go down. Coach Dale is hoping that the team, the coaches, and he can do want it takes to put this Pirate football team beyond district.
