The scrimmages are over and now the games count. The Deweyville Pirates open up against the East Chambers Buccaneers. Coach Lance Dale knows the Pirates will have their work cut out for them when they face the Buccaneers. Dale points out the Bucs return nine of their starters on offense from a team that went three rounds in the playoffs last year and eight starters are back on defense. East Chambers is ranked number nine in the state of Texas. The Buccaneers are well coached and play hard according to Dale.
East Chambers’ Coach Russ Sutherland has both his sons as stars on offense, with Austin at quarterback and Aaron at wide receiver. Dylan Silcox and Darius Guillory are also dangerous offensive weapons for the Bucs.
Coach Dale hopes his offense will be ready for this first game. Dale expects a big game from his leader on offense quarterback Triston Gordon. He also needs strong games from tailback Thomas Henson and fullback Mitchell Henson running the ball and blocking for each other. Dale hopes tight end Ryan Lee will have some big catches in the game. The Deweyville offensive line needs to step its game up. Dale admits some injuries on the offensive line have left them a bit short-handed going into the season opener.
The Deweyville Pirates will play East Chambers in the Butch Thomas Athletic Complex in Beaumont on Thursday. Dale states what the Pirates must do to pull out a victory is execute and play mistake free football which means avoiding turnovers and not missing assignments. Dale emphasizes tackling on defense is imperative; arm tackling will not get the Buccaneer runners down. The Pirates have to wrap up and tackle while keeping their feet moving. Coach Dale says Deweyville has a chance just like it does in every game, but it must execute on both sides of the ball.
