Fortunes may be looking up for the Bridge Cardinals basketball team. Coach Tony Knight looks at some of the players returning to the varsity for Bridge City. Gradon Glover and Conner Wilbur are both good all-around athletes competing excellently in cross-country. Knight says Grover and Wilbur combined for 27 points in the Cardinals’ season opening victory which gets the Cardinals on the right track helping them to get a playoff banner. Coach Knight has a good selection of young men coming up from the Junior Varsity that will make an impact on this year’s Cardinals’ Varsity squad. Knight sees Tommy Truong coming to the varsity as a senior to backup Gradon Glover and will be pushing him at every practice for a starting spot. Phillip Jacobs will fill in off the bench, can stretch the floor, and hit the long range shot. Bridge City is blessed to have three key players that have moved into the school since last year according to Knight. Johnathan Moore transferred in from Early, Texas is a 6’4” post man who plays well both inside and out, he moves real well Knight observes. Left-handed Dallas Grider moved to Bridge City from Missouri. Grider was the Cardinals’ leading scorer with 21 points in the season opener, and Coach Knight will be looking for a lot of scoring from him. Coming from Vidor is Daegan Smith who has lived previously in Bridge City and is expected to play a big role on the team as well. Could a playoff appearance be on the schedule for the Cardinals this season? Coach Knight thinks it might be. Knight states, “We’ve got more talent put together on this group than we’ve had in the past several years and we’re hoping that we can mold that into a playoff banner it would only be the fifth one in the school’s history, but that’s definitely what our goal is, that’s what the kids talk about at practice, it’s what I talk about at practice, that’s what we’re going for this year.”
