The Bridge City Cardinals have won their first two district games impressively. With three district games to go Coach Dwayne DuBois is thankful the Cardinals have avoided any serious injuries so far this season. DuBois hopes Bridge City will stay on that path.
The district competition gets tougher this week for the Cardinals when the Silsbee Tigers come to town. DuBois points out the Tigers are explosive on offense using either the Spread or the I formations and with Calvin Tyler carrying the football. He is a top level player and one of the best DuBois has ever seen.
Joining Tyler in the backfield is quarterback Willie Jones who throws the ball well and runs it well. The prime receiver Jones will be throwing to is Kalon Barnes who is a track star and a tremendous football player observes DuBois. Newcomer of the year last season is Adonis Thomas also at running back. The Tigers have a solid offensive line. “They’re jelling and they’re improving as a team and they’re getting better and better each week,” DuBois states.
Silsbee is also loaded with talent on defense according to Coach DuBois. The Tigers base out of a 50 front, but will show different looks. Michael McCain and Adonis Thomas are their linebackers and both are tremendous players. In the secondary is Bruce Newton at a cornerback who can blanket an opposing receiver. The Tigers will get after it on defense. DuBois exclaims, “They’ve got some talented kids over there that can really play.”
The two teams both come into the game 2-0 in district. DuBois is looking for the Cardinals to stay undefeated in district with a win over the Tigers. Keeping the ball out of the hands of the dangerous Tyler and the other talented offensive players on the Tigers is the key DuBois is emphasizing with the Cardinals. That means avoiding turnovers and running the Slot-T offense effectively to control the clock. On defense the key for the Cardinals is keeping Tyler from breaking the big play that has become a habit for him.
Coach DuBois adds he is pleased with the performance of the Bridge City specialty team last week with a successful onside kick and recovering a fumble on a kick return. He thinks the Cardinals will need another strong kicking game Friday night against Silsbee to get a victory.
The Cardinals and Tigers play Friday night in Bridge City. The game will be carried live on KOGT with the kickoff at 7:00 PM. The rebroadcast of the game will be Saturday morning at 7:00 on KOGT.
