Two undefeated teams in district matched up Wednesday night, and the Bridge City Lady Cardinals took the lead in the district race with an 8-1 victory over the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears at Lady Bear Softball Field. The Lady Cardinals used a potent one-two punch in the pitching circle to quiet the Lady Bears’ bats.
Ace pitcher Kassidy Wilbur started for Bridge City (20-2, 4-0) and pitched one-hit ball for four innings. She struck out nine Lady Bear batters. The only hit off of her was a double by Ashley Short in the third. LC-M (10-10, 3-1) threatened against Wilbur again in the fourth when Brianna Frenzel walked with one out followed by Kayla Manuel being hit by a pitch. Wilbur struck out the next two hitters to end the potential rally.
Relieving Wilbur in the circle was Peyton Trapp, and she was nearly as effective as Kassidy. Trapp retired the first five Lady Bears she faced before Frenzel drew her second walk. Frenzel was caught stealing to end the LC-M sixth.
The Lady Bears got on the scoreboard in their last at bat. Jone’e Villanueva doubled to the center field fence and went to third on a wild pitch. Morgan Weaver hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Villanueva home.
The Lady Cardinals took the lead in the first inning with the help of an error by the Lady Bears. Frenzel retired the first two Lady Cardinals, but Hannah Carpenter reached on an error. Wilbur rattled a triple off the right center field fence barely missing a homerun by a few feet that scored Carpenter to give Bridge City a 1-0 lead.
Bridge City batted around in the third inning against Frenzel scoring six runs in the process. Baili Thibodaux led off with a triple to left center and scored on a double by Carpenter. Wilbur singled to drive Carpenter home.
Caitlin Denison and Meagan Sourdellia both provided run scoring singles to left. Abby Anderson got a run batted in with a single to deep short. After an error Thibodaux got her second hit of the inning to bring in the final run and make the score 7-0 in favor of Bridge City.
Renna Toomey took over in the circle for the Lady Bears to close out the Bridge City third. Toomey pitched well giving up just the hit to Thibodaux in the third, a walk in the sixth which she helped erase by starting a nifty double play, and a homerun to Wilbur in the seventh which was the only run she allowed in four and a third innings.
