The scrimmages are over and now the games that count begin. The Bridge City Cardinals are in good shape as the season starts this Friday night.
Coach Dwayne DuBois starts his second season as the Cardinals’ head coach against the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns who will be looking for a new quarterback to replace Kendrick King and have a new head coach. King will not be easy to replace as he was an exceptional athlete. The Longhorns have switched to a Spread Offense according to DuBois and will be a little more wide open under first year coach Bill Jehling throwing the ball frequently.
Coming over to Hamshire-Fannett this season Coach Jehling brings with him the 3-3 Stack Defense he used as defensive coordinator at Lumberton last year. Coach DuBois says the Longhorns return several key players to their defense. Their noseguard looks like a very good football player and did an excellent job in the scrimmages. DuBois indicates the Cardinals will have to block him to control the football with their running game. The Longhorn linebackers look to be active, and they have an athletic secondary. DuBois admits Coach Jehling’s defense at Lumberton last year gave the Cardinals fits, and he expects the same with Hamshire-Fannett.
DuBois tells what his expectations are for the Cardinals. Consistency is what the coach is really looking for from Bridge City. He took the blame as coach for the Cardinals playing a little flat last week. More intensity, more aggressiveness to start the game, more focused, and cutting down on turnovers after nine fumbles last week are needed in the season opener from the Cardinals. Ultimately Coach DuBois states his goal, “We want to be better this week than we were last week.”
Quarterbacking the Cardinals will be Beau Trahan who played mostly on defense last year. Coach Dubois’ youngest son Caleb had Tommy John surgery and will miss the football season. Kickoff with the Cardinals and Longhorns will be at 7:30 PM.
